Nikon SLR help: Need recommendations

Hi,

You seem to be at a loss to which system to go to. You are actively looking for a Canon not too long ago. Did I talk to you in IRC?

Are you sure you want a Nikon? :p

Have you asked yourself why you wanted a Canon or Nikon?

I am using a F80 and find it sufficient for my needs. I am using a F65 last time. In fact, it meet my needs too.

Main advantages of F80 is the "Grid on demand" and the spot meter. The flash syn on the F80 is faster at 1/90 as compared to 1/60s for F65. Even so, the F80 tune the flash syn to 1/60 most of the time.

If you are buying 2nd hand, you best choice will be to see which system is on sale at a reasonable price first.

If ypu are buying new, you can't go wrong with either system. Maybe choose a system taht you friend or relative is using. This allow you 2 to share some equipment. Else, choose the system that belongs to any member here whose picture you admired the most.

Good luck.

Cheers!

The AFD70-210/4-5.6 is a better lens then the AFD70-300/4-5.6 optically. The ED glass in the AFD70-300 didn't really help much. The 62mm diameter of the AFD70-210 also makes it my favourite lens to slap on the Nikon 5T/6T close-up lenses for macro. And the AFD70-210 is sharp and distortion free. The only draw back of this lens is that it is a push pull zoom, and you get zoom creep if it is not tight, but then you can do zoom tricks with a push pull that is hard to do with ring zoom. :D The used price of this lens is about $230-$280 and I strongly recommend it.

Oh ya, there is also an older AF70-210/4. This lens has a constant aperture of f/4 but it lacks the D cpu chip. It's also a very good lens.

er i think the F80 flash syncs ar 1/125 for fill flash or 1/60 in darker conditions...never 1/90

thank u all. binbeto, wanted to go Canon. But realised that EOS30 is out of my budget. Wanting to look for something lower than EOS30, but realised none suited my taste. Until F80 came along and i realised its pretty good. Furthermore, F80 had a similar ergonomics of eos30 and comes with spot metering. Metal mounting etc.

So cost wise, thats made me went to F80. I even deleted my SLR recommendations thread at Canon. :p

Ziploc, the 70-300 also uses a 62mm thread. :p And i would prefer a zoom ring, did not feel accurate in setting my zoom with the push pull mechanism with pro90.

Thank u all.

More opinions! :)

I am not sure if Nikon is cheaper. You need to factor in the price of the lens too.

Ah yes. :) Lens are also factored in definitely.

max Flash sync of F80 is 1/125s, but there is no minimum one. U can shoot with flash at as low as 30s...in slow sync mode.:)

yah of course... understanding how flash works can be a handful to understand sometimes...

i feel that 1/125 abit slow leh... especially for outdoor people portraits... risk of shake if shooting at 135mm focal length.

Wryer, you don't need anymore opinions. Kho King's recommendation is exactly what I would have recommended too.

Go for a new or used F80 and either get a Nikkor 50mm F1.8 or a non Nikkor (Sigma or Tamron) 28-105(or longer) F whatever. Thanks to technology, Sigma and Tamron makes lenses very comparable in quality to the Nikkor ones, especially as the optical qualities.

I have the F80 and I can tell you that when I first read the manual, it was wow! after wow on almost every page! It's got ALL the features you will ever need from beginner to pro and more, especially when you have no accumulated old NIkkor Manual lenses you want to use. It's sought of like the poor man's F100. There's only one thing I hate about the F80 - you can't meter with Manual lenses, and I've got quite a few of those.

Go read Kho King's review of the F80 and be convinced!

Best of all, it will be within your budget.

Congratulation! ;)

Thanks Ansel for the kind words :)

Congratulations Wryer!

I also have the 28-80 G lens. Although it doesn't look like it externally, it is actually a very good lens optically! The pictures are pin sharp as far as I can see. Good contrasts too. Some people say the colour rendition is not so accurate, but IMO it is OK. It's amazing what they managed to achieve with just 6 elements!

I don't own the 70-300 D, so I cant really comment because I don't have it. I've got the old 75-300 F4.5-5.6 instead.

See if you can find a lens hood for the 28-80. A lens hood is something I believe very strongly. I believe the 70-300 should come with it's own lens hood. Always remember to use it.

Also remember to store all you photographic equipment in a dry box when not in use. I breaks my heart see fungus grow on a good lens.

Now go out and take some pictures!! I recommend using slide film and scanning into CD for ease of posting on web. Buy provia 100f from Dagger in the next MO.

P.S Kho King, I think you've done a good job on your website. Wish I can do the same.

Thanks Ansel! Temporary still using a airtight container with silicon.

All right, i have gotten my F80.
Time to end this thread.

Thanks to all who have helped me in a way or another in choosing my SLR systems; no matter if it was on Canon or Nikon.

Thanks to people who have volunteered to view the camera, even if we did not work it out. I am very grateful to the 5 of you who have came and volunteered.

Thanks to all buyers and sellers of the equipment. Was sorry to some of you because one of the buyer came close to 20min late. Anyway, it was my fault too, i planned the schedule too tightly.

Special thanks to Kho King, Falcon and many many others who have helped me.

Regards

Nikon F80 body + 28-105 ( is there such a lens?) + grip.

Hi
Congraturates !!

i'm also sastified owner of ur "beloved combo" :

F80D+28-105D+grip
and i also bought 50/F1.8 and SB50DX

forgot how much i spend 'cos i bought these stuff in phases....

vrtical grip is a must for me, i got big and slippery hand....i even made my own handstrap..:)

SB50DX is good enough for me to take some indoor gathering picture, normally i combined with the built-in flash to eliminate harsh shadow and believe me, it works.

can invest on lenses since u could upgrade or SLR in future while use back the lenses...eg. a digital SLR

might sell the body and grip if D100 drop under S$2K :)

sorry to make ur threads upz again...itching hand...
