something to do wif stress on the glass..by placing the lens in a vertical position..the glass elements are rested in a flat position..some ppl oso mention abt placing the lens wif rear element down..but i doubt my 70-200 can stand still wif rear element down, so its always with the front element down..correct me if i'm wrong..

?
Then how do people store their long exotic telephotos

The elements are spaced apart and held by the construct.
Dun think the glass elements are physically stacked on top of each other and can migrate with different positions

The only thing perhaps is it might be unstable putting the smaller area down

i think nikon made sure our lens dont crumble under its own weight, imagine if we were shooting halfway(when the lens is in horizontal position) and the whole lens implodes?! hahah

will this lens look funny on a d40?

nope, your camera will look funny with the lense...
:bsmilie:

just joking...;)

seriously, your lense and camera will both good with each other:) happy shooting bro!

:bsmilie: Then a 600mm prime would look funny on any of the Nikon cameras
What probably matters is they work well together to give you the shots you want.

Haha.. and when you bring the 600mm out, remember to wear your SBO as well as sling for your 600mm :bsmilie:

My seem a bit awkward to hold as the body is small though.

The whole system will be a bit unbalanced if you don't have a battery grip.
Without the grip, you cannot hold on to your system with your full palm i guess.
And the lens is heavy lor. Will create a "cantilever" effect i feel.

But D40, D40X and D60 no battery grips right?:dunno:

My view la. :)

Well thats true but depends on the people's hand size too lol. Yeah its a pain nikon doesn't make grips for the D40-D60.

Make that D40-D70.

That's why Nikon came out with small standard, 18-55 and telephoto zoom, 55-200 lenses, covering wide to tele focal length to complement those small bodies.
