Nikon D3300 User Thread

Sample picture taken with D3300 with Nikon 24mm 1.4 G with B+W CPL Filter

I wasn't very satisfied with the handling of the file. It didn't allow me to photoshop as extensively as i used to. As such, i think its good as a family camera and not something Professionals would use to submit to their clients. Also, maybe i was pampered by the D800, so even with no AA filter, 24 MP and at D3300's MTF, i didn't get the sharpness i would like to get.

Of course, this camera is sufficient for average use. But for some of us who demands a lot and looking for a smaller package, this camera 'can do' but it has its limitation.

Hi Jace,

that's a nice shot.

Question, do you do a lot of Highlight/shadow pulling in post ?

i think that's because the D3300 NEF is a compressed 12-bit vs a uncompressed 14-bit on the d800.

in that area, the d3300 is crippled as it does not retain much details due to the data compression.

Cheers,

John

Hi john, yes I do a lot of pulling in post. Yes, 12 bit isn't sufficient except for family portraits :)

Previously i posted on my dissatisfaction on the jpeg files. The reasons is because when you adj in photoshop (i.e Hue, Saturation), artifacts start to appear.

I recently came across a method to help reduce these artifacts. I have tried it on D3300 files. It helps quite a lot. The bending that use to appear, now is much suppressed.

This method gives D3300 users a way to use their images professionally.

Hey there. Having just sold my D5000 I am (almost) ready to get a replacement DX camera (my FF are D800 and Df), mostly for my daughter's use, and perhaps as a more capable body for travel (over Nikon 1 bodies). I found that in the US D5300 costs about $100 more than D3300, but packed with it 39 pt AF (which I can do without), articulated screen (again can do without), 24 mp AA-less sensor (the same as D3300), and with built-in Wifi and GPS (both of which I can fix to D3300 as add-on as I already have the modules - WU-1a and third party GPS). Each feature by itself is not a great improvement over the D3300, but the sum of the total is to my mind worth the extra dollars, especially since the difference is more than made up by the GPS and Wifi built-in. Plus there is less things dangling from the body. Weight is not too different... IMO.

So I am curious, what are some considerations for choosing D3300 over D5300?

Nice write-up. Curious - if you shoot raw does it show the same trouble as jpeg? I doubt it, but better to ask.

Thanks for the interest in this thread. I hope it's useful.

Before i go on further. I noticed that i have been dissatisfied with some features and returning to say it's ok. Or worse, the other way round. haha.

This is a step by step discovery and each phase, i learn something new as time progresses. So, please don't get annoyed with my contrary comments in different parts of this forum.

Just a little background so you know from which angle i think. I do shoot professionally and do a lot more Digital Imaging. But this isn't my made source of income. I am a pixel-peeper. I peep at 200-300% of image files. I bought the D3300 because all other good cameras are too heavy to travel around with. haha. I am hoping to 'make-do' with this camera.

I was evaluating Sony a7r, Fuji XT-1, D600 before settling for the D33000. D3300 isn't perfect. But it does Noise better than a7r in my humble opinion. It's file size isn't better than XT-1 but quite close to it. But XT-1 is more than SGD 2000. D3300 is only SGD 740.

I chose the D3300 over the D5300 because it's a newer camera. It's smaller and more compact. I also chose it because it had the new 18-55 mm lens.

The cons of D3300
- the lack of AA filter is utterly useless. The improvement in sharpness is slight that you can't do much about it. So, the new 18-55 isn't something good. For small sharp lenses, i think Fuji makes them better.
- severely lacking fast, wide angle lenses.

The Pros
- Small and cheap

What is important to know is, i am 'cheating' with this camera. I am using a SGD 2 K 24 mm F1.4G on this camera. Most hobbyist may not have this lens. So if you want to get this lens to attain sharpness, it's pretty hard. But of course, my expectation of sharpness is different from yours.

Sharpness, with the D3300, is possible with high end lenses. But the sweet spots are hard to achieve at times. The only other good lens is the 50 mm F1.8G which i have tested and is good. The lack of fast wide angle lens puts this camera in the same dilemma as buying the Sony a7r. :( (Sony a7r does not have native wide angle fast lenses).

Looking at lens choices, Fuji seems to be a better option (in terms of APSC lens choices). But Fuji may not 'win' in terms of Image quality.

And to the question of Raw and Jpegs...

1) I did some shots with jpegs. The camera is set to normal (to us asians, it's slightly under exposed). I managed to PS the pictures without bending. See below. However for some shots which i think is properly exposed (asian standards), the jpegs have banding issues.

<Picture with normal 'exposed' setting from camera and colors adjusted. No banding issues.>

I would be doing some tests on the RAW file. So stay tuned!!! Personally i suspect the problems are the same...

Is this camera comparable to the D800? No. I miss my D800 badly. But i don't miss the weight... :bsmilie:
