Nikon D3100 REVIEW & High ISO 12800 test

looks good, specs decent... maybe can buy it as a 2nd cam and let my gf use also...

It is not a surprised.
The Nikon sensor is made by Sony. So Nikon can't get the latest of Sony technology. No wonder that Nikon need to pay very expensive to Sony to use 24MPixel sensor for Nikon D3X :(

That's why I said that Nikon D3100 is similar with Sony A550 (released end of 2009), with 14MPixel and ISO 12800.
But not similar with Sony A55 (released in mid of 2010), with 16MPixel and ISO 25600.

The D7000 will use the A55 sensor.

And yes, Nikon DOES get the latest Sony technology. But Nikon will only get the BASE sensor, then spend some time creating and fine-tuning their own AA filter array, etc. That's where the delay comes in.

Nikon is one of Sony's biggest customers.

and in the case of the D3X sensor, the claim by Nikon is that it was designed by Nikon and then produced by Sony's sensor foundary, and it is not a sensor of Sony's design...

It's the A900 sensor with a different AA filter and tuned gain levels.

Do you know that Sony A55 has beaten Canon EOS 550D/Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2/Sony Alpha NEX-5 in term of ISO performance?
Check Here !

Sony A55 just win Dpreview gold award.
Nikon D7000 will use the A55 sensor ! This is great news !

Read some old review on DPreview that compared Sony A550 sensor and D5000 sensor. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sony*********a550/page13.asp

Seems like the A550 still performs a little poorer in terms of RAW noise than the D5000 sensor. If D3100 is really using the A550 sensor, hope Nikon did some magic with it to improve its ISO performance.

Mr. Rockwell has given quick review for the new D3100.

Looks like Nikon video capability can't keep up with the video resolution of Canon's DSLRs like the 7D and 5D Mark II. But they are in a different market range.

Still no HIGH ISO test though.

and looking at the size of the sensors and raw pixel count, that would seem likely, although Nikon seems to say they developed the sensors themselves... probably from the Sony base sensor technology... :)

They are all mostly designed in a Nikon/Sony joint venture.

I know the D300 shares the sensor with A700. I believe the base design is the same. Some modifications were made to the base design and out came the sensor for D90/D5k/D300s/A500/Kx.

I believe it is the same case with D3100. Where they reuse a base design (A550), did some modifications in the design. It is not a completely new chip from ground up.
very much doubt that the designs are from a joint venture... more like Sony has base designs, Nikon is allowed to mod it and use it for their own cameras, rather than the two companies working together to design the sensor (which should be how a joint venture design should work)... but the fact of the matter is that the D3100 sensor is significantly smaller while having a larger pixel count than comparable Sony sensors, when historically when they share sensor designs, the sizes and pixel counts are very much similar... and the D3100 sensor is significantly smaller than any previous Nikon DX size sensor...

I think his "review" really stretches the idea of the word review, considering he has not have personally tried out the camera and he is only extrapolating from the specifications...

and his remark that Nikon "can't keep up with the video resolution of Canon's DSLRs like the 7D and 5D Mark II" (emphasis added)... hmm...

looking at 1080p video... people who shoot video for a living would tell you (and he himself acknowledges) that they don't really use 30/29.97fps or 25fps anyway, and that the preferred rate to shoot is 23.976fps (for workflow compatibility reasons and such)... so is it that they can't keep up or they are just offering what people shoot at?... the slightly faster rate hardly improves video quality... and notice that Canon actually started out offering only 30fps with the 5DII, and then when people complain about how difficult it is to adapt that into their workflow, then they, to their credit, added the other 2 frame rates...

as for 720p, yes, the D3100 can't shoot at the faster 60p that the two mentioned Canon's can... so if anything, Nikon at this point in time can't keep up with frame rate, not resolution... and who knows if this is for product differentiation or because their tech/software doesn't make it feasible yet... we will see when the D7000 (or even a possible more high end model) comes out soon...

Nikon D3100 or any camera, toy or not. depend who is using? A idiot with a D3X is still a idiot camera. ;)

But there are also limits to such entry level cameras. You can't just say that a pro with any sort of camera can make all their photos turn out great. For instance, if you want to shoot something and make it into slowmo, you can't do it with 30 fps.

I'm not saying the D3100 can do everything, I just can't stand people comparing who had the most expensive camera. ;p BTW: How often you shoot slowmo? Take a look at these amazing photo taken with an iphone. :)

I am not saying iPhone can't take nice photos, I'm saying it has limits. I'm also not disputing your stand that an idiot with a good camera will still be unable to take nice photos :)

What a nice photo. Thanks for sharing !

Looks like the announcement of D7000 completely steal public attention from D3100.

I think D3100 should be announce earlier, not in the same time with D7000.

Bad timing for D3100 announcement ?

Think there are still some of us who still pay attention to the D3100 release news. I'm anxiously waiting for the reviewers to reviews the cam. :) The only disappointing this is the lack of Commander mode.

Well there has to be limits to the lower end model what. If the lower end models have CLS, good controls, 51 AF points, weather sealing etc etc, then why buy the more expensive models?
