Nikon D300 in snowing condition....

The D300 is well sealed and will definitely handle the snow conditions. It's the battery that suffers from cold temperatures - the colder, the less output - so it's difficult to say exactly how much less but used 50% as a guide. Just bring spare batteries and keep the rest warm until just before use. The cold battery will deliver some output again when warmed up.

Lens wise, I'd recommend the pro 17-55 or any other pro lenses as these ones have a gasket-seal at the place where the lens meets the body mount. This makes sure snow or dust or moisture don't creep in via the lens mount. I don't have the VR 18-2000 but I suspect this lens DOES NOT have the seal found on the pro lenses.

I have used the D200/D300 with the pro 17-55 in snow, in dessert sand, in rain - it works fine. Just remember to dry the equipment out after shooting.

Happy shooting.

Hmm... The 18-200VR has a rubber gasket seal at the mount, is that what you are talking about?

Hi Guys,

I would like to find out if anyone has brought the Nikon Dx00 series to countries that snows?

  • How long can the battery last in this kind of condition?
  • Will 18-200mm VR work properly?
  • Should I bring the pro lens like the 17-55mm?
  • Is there anything that I have to watch out for when shooting in this kind of environment?

Many Thanks.

In winter and snows,
1 Battery life will reduce. So prepare spare batteries and put them in the inside pocket.
2/3 For zoom lens, the zoom gets stuck, regardless it's pro or not. Autofocus shouldn't have problem.
4 I think one has to pay attention to the condensation when enter from a cold place into a warm place, i.e. from outdoor to indoor. Sudden change in temperature will cause condensation.

Another post, under the same forum thread

I believe your question on the battery lift has been answered.

I brought my D80 plus 18-200mm VR to Hokkaido last March and was using it while it was snowing heavily with temperature of around -10 and everything worked perfectly. While changing lens, I actually dropped the 18-200mm VR onto hard ground from waist height and it survived the fall with damage only to the lens hood that was attached to it. All other lenses I brought along the trip, including the Nikkor 12-24mm, Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye, Nikkor 50mm f1.8 and Sigma 30mm f1.4 performed without any problem. I think modern electronics and lenses are far tougher than most people had imagined.

I didn't take any special precaution. Some had mentioned about fogging problem but with ambient temperature generally very cold, this should not be a problem at all.

i used my D300 last year in Switzerland and Bosnia during walks in cold and icy weather. I had zero battery problem even though i carried the cam always in the fresh air and not in bag.
In Bosnia i went for a 6h hike in snow and minus temps between -5 to -10. shot several hundred pics and had not battery problem. Recharge the battery only every third day or so and able to shoot 500-600 shots on one battery...
i dont see a problem at all

Thanks for the heads-up for D300 performing without a hitch in cold weather! I am heading up to NY and Niagara Falls for holidays from 20 Nov onwards. Yippee!
