U can start with 50mm f1.8 (abt $180) and 85mm f1.8 (abt $600), reasonable price and reasonable quality, Cathay Photo and Alan Photo are the more popular stores.

thanks guys

what are the lenses you guys can recommend for portraiture

I've changed all my lenses to prime. My favourite is 85mm f/1.4. Another good one is used by my buddy 105mm DC f/2. If low in budget, start with 50mm f/1.4 (quality not as fantastic).

70-200mm f/2.8 VR is another good portraiture lens too. Can use for many other purposes like shooting events. A bit heavy and expensive though.

All the above are definitely good investments.

was at John 3:16 yesterday. D200 going for $2200

Wah.. thast a good price
tmr i go buy le..
Is the kit lens any good for this camera?
After gettin the D200 body i only got ard 400+ bucks left in budget for a lense......

Ok, for the last time, the D200 has no kit lens.

Got $400+ go get the Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 lens or a 2nd hand lens in B&S. :)

Actually... I'd rather u go get other lenses. Or even primes...

18-70 can't resolve image well on the D200...

Try the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 or if you want a more tele option, the 28-75 f2.8

Both are around $600+ brand new so look for a second hand one, and it should meet your budget.

Drop me a PM if you're interested in a 2nd hand Tamron 28-75 f/2.8

Cheers for yet another happy D200 user :)

Hi zac,

Care to elaborate?

TIA:)

In simple terms, he means, the camera's resolving power is greater than the lens. i.e. Many of the flaws in the 18-70 is going to show up in images taken with the D200.

The wise old adage of... always get better lenses than your body. Save up. Buy an excellent lens and it will last you generations of bodies.

one workaround is to shoot at lower megapixels. you don't always need 10MP for everything. :bsmilie:

Tat's true. But since you got a high powered machine... why use it at lower powers? Get better lenses and you'd have more options of cropping or edits...

How about 24-85, is it better then the 18-70? :)

Since I'm still new to the DSLR, guess i'll settle for cheaper lense and get familiar with the camera's capabilities, while saving up for good lense in the future.

Thx for all the suggestions guys! :D

the 28-105 is very sharp on the d200. The lens is perfect for the d200, at 100% still very sharp!

I ll post a crop in a sec

Here is a 100% crop
