Hello,

I am transiting in singapore in feb and interested in buying the Nikon D200 (or D2X), does anybody know if there is a camera store inside the airport worth considering?

I transit for 6hrs, maybe there is a nearby camera store I could make it too?

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,

You might want to try some of the shops listed here:

I'm not sure if you're going to get a good price even if they have stocks. If you're planning to take a short city trip, you might want to try the area around City Hall. I don't think it'll take you long even if you travel by train. Around the area, there's a few shops that people here frequent. The info here should be very helpful. :)

Have a good trip.

I remember there is 1 CS member works in the Changi airport camera shop. U buy there no GST...

Thanks for your replies, much appreciated!

BTW - Do you know if I can get in touch with the CS member who works in the Changi store, maybe he can give me some concrete info or further help?

Thanks again.

If it helps, his nick is Simon80.

Dunno if they sell such high end stuff at the airport, remembered all the electronics there are overpriced and mostly common electronics.

Well I dont know? Is there any way to search for a member and leave them a message?

Otherwise I;ll just keep an eye out for the nickname.

Thanks

you from which country.... buying from airport is very expensive plus Nikon DSLR only have local limited warranty......

its better for you to get it localy from your country safer :)

At the moment I dont really belong to any one country, I am from Australia, but live in Germany . So I kinda come from either side of the globe to singapore but often stop by.

But I get your point, local warranty is great to have, I just had the impression that I could save some precious coins in singapore. Maybe not?

Thanks folks

hmm if that the case then no problem to buy in airport

You could try the local shops, friend of mine got his set for 2950 SGD just a week ago, though i;m not sure if they still have stocks or not.

this is STRICTLY OT, but che, you're an AMAZING photographer. I love your work really

Was that set the D200? what did he get for that price? I wont be there till feb, so maybe the stocks will be in by then.

And also.....would it be realistic to get from Changi airport to the camera shop in the city and back under 6hrs? I only have a limited time unfortunately.

Yup it was for the d200, he got the standard boxed set with local warranty, i think it really depends on what time you transit though, if it's in the day, then i'll safely say it's worth it. Travelling time to the city area iisn't really that long if you're arriving say late morning to 4pm plus.

Yea, i was thinking the same thing too, feb, more stocks prob might come in then. Drop me a PM when you're coming by, i'll help you check or something.

since ur on transit .. I don think u r able to leave the airport

check this web and email them your enquiry

I think the price is $31xx

Hopes this help

You guys are really wonderful! so much advice and help.....oh and Castlesinthesky thanks for the kind words about my work....always nice.

BTW, do you have a gallery online I can check out?

I did enquire, and I am able to leave the terminal as I am stopping for longer than 6hrs.
But as noted by Castlesinthesky, the traffic could be an issue as I will get in just after 17:00 and leave after midnight.

But I will contact some store and see if it's possible.

Thanks again!

Hi Che,
With 6 hours, there is more than enough time to leave the airport and back. Traffic is not an issue because it takes only 20 mins to reach the city via our expressway (some taxis could even make it in 15). Taking the train takes about 35 minutes (alight at City Hall station), but if your plane lands on Terminal 1, it'll be a long walk to the station.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changi_Airport_MRT_Station

Anyway, most of the popular camera shops close around 8pm so you have 4 hours to get back to the airport.

I do feel that it's better as a tourist to buy the cam in Changi Airport due to the following:
1) You MAY be able to get international warranty (maybe check with the CS guy who works in Changi Airport)
2) Even if you only get local warranty, check if the store is also a servicing drop-off centre. Say if the cam is spoilt and you are transiting Singapore again, you could drop off at the shop who will send for servicing, then when you transit again, you can get your camera back.
3) 100% reliability, afterall it's a Changi Airport shop! I reckon you will get better service attention, the shop is spacious, you have ample time to test the camera, make sure it's 100% working before you carry it. And remember if you buy outside Changi Airport, you can apply for 5% GST rebate, so that requires some paperwork done at the shops for you to submit to the tax counter at Changi Airport. And by the way, not all shops offer GST rebates schemes.
4) The low prices that are quoted in ClubSNAP assumes cash payment. Credit card will incur a surchage of 3-5%.

The advantage of buying at the City shops is you get to buy other lenses and accessories as well.

The bottom line is: if you can afford to pay a little more for the no-frills shopping experience, stay around the Airport. If you feel want the best bargains and enjoy the fun of shopping around for the best deals, do drop by our shops in the City. I'm sure if the schedule permits, some of CS-ers might even be your personal guide, myself included!

And oh, if you need to contact any shops without website/email, just post your questions here and let us (or me) do the calling.

oh well, there are already a lot of advice given to you. Judging from your time of arrival, if you reach town 'late', the only camera shop around the CITY HALL vicinity which closes late would probably be JOHN 3:16 ---- no, it's not a biblical bookshop but a camera shop run by a nice christian family :) . It is located at FUNAN CENTRE, 3RD STOREY. Just give them a ring at (65)63372877 from the airport or even before you leave for Singapore...... you can even get a quote and they will wait for you. If noone picks up your call, it's normal as they are usually busy serving customers. Trust that they will be there if they are expecting you.

I hope this helps. Do drop us a reminder again before your flight.

Cheers !

I heard John 3:16 can deliver to their customers in hotels, so u may like to ask them for the delivery service. This is the kind of camera shop you can trust in Singapore.

i doubt there is a D200 in the airport, i just passed by 2 days ago. the highest range they have from Boon eletronics in the airport is the Olympus E-500.:dunno:

Im actually werkin in Boon & Co at terminal 1, The D200 is selling at $3131 with free lowepro bag but the warranty is only local.
