Nikon D100 or Fuji FinePix S2 Pro

may want to consider the D70 too. The pre-release specs by Thom Hagon look very interesting and matches the top end DSLR (e.g. 1/500s x-sync and 20 frame buffer)!

I disagree with this statement as I shoot in RAW and Jpg with my S2 and in both instances - the images are great. Just want to level the playing field. :)

I am not here to say which camera is better, however, what I would say is that you should determine what sort of photography you will be doing to derive what sort of demands you would have from your camera.
For instance - what sort of photography are you going to be doing most of time? - events? sports? nature? etc
how large are you going to enlarge your photos?
and so on

Asking yourself this kind of question to help you arrive your requirements so that you can be very specific in acquiring feedback to help you in your decision making process. Along the way, you might receive value added advise based on your requirements which helps clarify or even reinforce your decision making process.

Just my 2 cents worth
Happy snapping

I did not say the S2 images are bad. However, I feel that the Fuji's RAW implementation is seriously flawed. The reason for RAW format is to correct for WB, exposure, curves, sharpening, etc. Correct me if I am wrong but from my online research, the Fuji RAW File Converter LE is useless as it just do straight conversion to TIFF with no other options available. The optional File Converter EX gives you some options but again only outputs to TIFF. That leaves you with 3rd party converters like Photoshop CS which always need colour and white balance adjustments to match the original Fuji output. C1 DSLR does not support Fuji yet. If you haven't tried Nikon Capture RAW converter, you don't know what you are missing out on.

76 images in a 1GB card is also a big negative. It's obvious you seldom shoot in RAW format.

I am not interested in starting a flame here. :(
I am only expressing my opinion and experence with the S2 for the benefits of others who are interesting in reading. I felt that the statement - If you want to shoot RAW, get the D100. If you only shoot JPEG get the S2Pro - - needs to be set in perspective.

One more thing - I always shoot in raw for most of my shoots. And I did not implied that you said that the S2 yield bad images.
All I am saying is that one needs to understand how to use their own equipment well to yield the desired results. Happy Chinese New Year :)

Thank you

Seems like this boils down to the software application provided rather than the machine itself. I have had the opportunity to own the S1, S2 and D1X and have shot in TIF, RAW and JPG. While S1 cannot shoot in RAW, its TIF pictures are better looking than the other 2 machines. However this is my own observation and thru my own equipment. The RAW by S2 and D1X didn't show me any difference with the exception that D1X can compress RAW when shooting. This, as pointed out, is the advantage over the S2. But in JPG, the colors rended by the S2 outpaced the D1X only slightly; its livelier. I dont know about the D100 but from some posting on comparision it produced rather flat but natural colors. As a end-user, I prefer the S2.
Hereagain is my own experience and opinion but the subject point is the software and not so much of the machines which is personal preference.

Cheers

Read n read still dunno which is better :dunno:

I tried my friend's set, found that the AF was quite slow and Auto WB gave a blue cast for indoor shot. Is it normal?

One shop claims to have one last piece of S2 for $2850... can buy or not?? (S3 dunno when come out, if ever)

How to determine that which is better?

Simple, as long as you like the camera, and what it produces, it's the best. We can argue on forever and quote sources and findings and our own preference and beliefs, at the end of the day, whichever camera that feels comfortable in your hands probably rules.

What's a man's meat can be another man's poison. To decide which is best for you is not only the images produced, but the capability of the cameras as well. RAW/TIFF/JPG are just formats, it's how well the photographer can use the camera to capture them.

AF is subjective to the type of lens used, likely might be a slow lens rather than the body's problem.

Just my 0.02c.

To aviod those "neo-philosophical" (sp?) talks (ya, we all know it's the man behind the cam..blah blah ;) ), let me put it simply: D100 vs S2, which is better? In terms of quantifiable things like:

1. $$$$ - abt the same, rite?
2. build quality - abt the same, no?
3. AF speed - slight adv. to D100 (so I have read, true?)
4. colour - adv S2
5. resolution - adv S2
6. RAW - adv D100 ?
7. Sh. lag - adv D100?
8. Firewire - one up for S2
9. battery - adv D100 (or maybe not)
10. logo - Nikon/FinePix which one sounds better? (this is not really quantifiable:p )
11. _____ wat else??

Maybe it's a "wrong place" to ask this question :bsmilie: but we shall see.

may i be so bold as to suggest this.
try the two cameras for yourself.

If you are interested, we could meet on a agreed date - I could bring my S2 for you to feel and experience the camera. Ideally - you could have your own compact flash card - I will be happy to share with you in person my experiences and why I purchased the S2.

Go through the same exercise with the D100.

And then - you decide.
Best if you could do the test of the two cameras side by side. Both are good cameras with strengths and weaknesses.

Once you understand that - combined with what sort of photography you are interested in pursuing, I am sure that you will make the right choice.

I know its hard in deciding and especially where so much money is at stake. I was fortunate to have that oppt to help me decide my camera.

Hope this makes sense to you.

Many thanks to Alvin for your kind offer. Your unbiased comments and your colorful S2 gallery speaks volume about the capability of the S2 pro (and you, of course). I can easily try out both D100 and S2 from my friends.

In any case, unless S3 pro is out tml, I would most likely be $2850 poorer :D

Cheers!
