if it is a japanese name it should pronouce it as "ni-kong" its a three syllables word: ni-ko-n (they don't say "n" but "ng" instead).
and if ckiang got that "nippon kongaku" right, my jap friend will spell it as: ni-ho-ng ko-ng-ga-ku.

but who cares, i say "naikon"
:)

Just my 2 cents worth.

It's a Japanese name.
Nee-cone is how a Japanese would say it.
Nee-kon is how an English speaker would say it.

oops, its "kogaku" not "kongaku"

Yes.........Canon is now SO ADVANCED that they don't even know how to make mechanical cameras. A system without its roots.......without a soul...so sad. :):):)

Actually Canon thought they "can con" nikon customers to buy thier product since nikon customers are all kenna conned already. So they decide to stick Nikkor lenses onto the first canon cameras.

however, true blue discerning Canon users hated that Nikkor piece of crap, so Canon turned to making their own :)

Wrong, wrong. "Kena Con" is Singlish. "Kena" is Bahasa Melayu. Nikon is Japanese. They won't understand "Kena Kon". Besides, that's early 1900s. :D

True. And they decide to abandon the many FD mount users and opted to design an entirely new mount for their EOS....

"But...but I just upgraded to a Canon F1 last year!".

err.. think pronunciation of the brand should depend on the origination of the company. e.g. Nike - 'Nai Kee' ya?

'Nai Con' is the American pronunciation of a Japanese brand. It's okay if you wanna converse in American. And you'd probably get your message across in half the countries around the world.

But you don't pronouce Sushi as 'Soo Shai'. :)

I say 'Nee Con' cause it's closer to the original pronunciation. But hey, I'm no phonetics expert. 'Nai Kon' sounds just too yankee for my liking.

Acturally I think both "Neee Kon" & "Nai Kon" refer to different things. Cos when I when to UK during my studies, I call up their customer service. Then an answering machine pick up and say that something like:
If you are enquiring about Nikon Camera please press '1'
If you are enquiring about Nikkor Lens please presss '2'
...

And I notice that they prononce Nikon & Nikkor differently, one as Neee Kon and the other as Nai Kon. But now I can't remember which is which...

You are probably hearing "NaiKon" and "NeeKor". Which is strange, coz in the UK, people are supposed to be saying "NeeKon" and "NeeKor".

Linus Torvaulds himself pronounces it as "Lee-nucks". Some also pronounce Linix (as in Unix).

nai-ko............................. like hokkein underwear!!!:bsmilie:

Na Ni Nu Ne No

Ka Ki Ku Ke Ko

N

Nikon should be pronounced Ni kon with a silent 'k' sound in between and a silent "ng" sound at the end ... the "k" in between will cause a momentary break.

trust me ... all those years in Japanese Studies has drilled me to a certain extent ...

Cheers

Triston
