HAHAHAHA your comment reminds me of a time in school when a guy keep asking stupid question in class... we all shows our frustration and the prof said..." there is no such thing called stupid question.." immediately a student cut in and said.."but we cannot say the same for the person who ask the question" :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

Take a look at this EBAY Auction

And it's all for a couple of stupid boxes.

This may be a fake auction.
The seller may also be the buyer under another assumed identity.
Or they are different persons in cahoots.

The local version is the China-man speaking in Mandarin at Pasar malams conducting auction for silly items likesome glass crystals, etc... Some fake "bidders" (pre-arranged) will be sitting the whole night listening to his drivel and rubbish. Who sits whole night at auctions?
Nobody except fake bidders.
The fake bidders will "bid" and some fool will buy at even higher price.

Same for this.
It is to establish a "market" price for something silly that otherwise is worthless.
Waiting for impressionable FOOL to bite the next time this is put on market.
Or in private sale. Seller will use the e-Bay auction bid as "proof" of value.

Just to expose this dirty trick, why don't Terence put up a roll of old toilet paper (unused - mint condition) on auction and then idor bid US$30,000 for it.
Whether finally the sale is transacted is between the two of them.

I've seen fake auctions being bid up to crazy heights before. Remember a 1DmkII that sold for $16,000,000+

The bids on this one does look a little suspicious but I've been told past auctions for such boxes hit about $500-$600. $1500 just seems really really really ridiculous.

Talk about don't know what to do with your money. This one takes the cake.

Oei... why use my name... anyways, that method of jacking up price is very common in ebay lah... worse of all its legal... thats why I always bid at the very last second...

Are the ebay fees worth this type of scam ?

That was because some caring bidders were trying to avoid an innocent person to bid for it, thats why they bid to such ridiculous prices. To make sure no real buyer will win the auction............I have done it once.

Be careful on eBay with laptops, handphones, digital cameras, collectible cameras (people have contacted me several times after I was bidding on some).....trying to sell the same camera OR worse: they say they are the seller and want to sell me off eBay!

This one goes high, because it has both boxes, Nikon at the time typically delivers the Nikon rangefinders in the sales box (white) and this was again wrapped inside the brown box, which was usually thrown away by the shopowner who sells the camera). This makes it extremely rare now to find it together.............and this white box was for the 5 cm/1.1 lens also quite rare, yes, collectors are strange. :-)......

By the way: the seller is a reputable seller and Nikon rangefinder/expert collector. He is very active on the NHS (Nikon Historical Society).............so better apologize to him :-)

If you look at the past bidders for this auction: there are several Nikon rangefinder collectors in there, one is even Robert Rotoloni.........some here will know who he is.

Although rare, not all high value items/auctions on eBay are scams......luckily!

I know, that's why I said "fake auctions".

One man's junk is another man's treasure :bsmilie:

Now that mooncake festival is around corner.
Guys, better start keeping the mooncake box especially those Tung Lok brand types with a different movie/tv star every year. Because it is a different star every year, it will have rarity value next time 30 years later.
Lock them in the bank safe deposit.
One day they can be auctioned on e-bay for US$30,000.

And learn from the Nikon SP box madness.
DON"T throw away the outer and inner wrappers/boxes. Since most people would throw this away, it will become rare. Because it is rare, it is supposed to be worth a lot of $$$. (that's the Nikon box collector's logic). Alamak! I threw away the Magnolia ice cream wrappers of my 5 cents red bean ice cream from the 1960s. Now maybe be worth $10,000 at least if auctioned on e-bay.

(deleted self edit. a bit over the top)

I just paid about Sgd$60 for 13 old nikon caps + 4 mamiya caps on Ebay. Am I mad?

Last time, I paid Sgd$30 dollars for various 70's nikon or nikkor stickers too....
I am certain mental institution got my name somewhere

(self edited version)

But lens caps are genuinely useful things.
Their function is to prevent scratches to the front lens elements or the filter and keep out water, moisture, sand and dust. So it was a good buy.

Not so sure about the internal and external wrapping boxes. most people throw away at least one of them.

Some will keep in the hope that 55 years later (now) some guy will pay $$$ for it.
Their dreams come true.

If someone had told Nikon SP buyers in the 1950s to keep the paper boxes as they will be worth $$$ 55 years later, many will say he is cuckoo.
