Really depends on how you define walkabout? And what are you shooting.
For me - if its outdoor with ample lighting. 17-55 2.8 will be a great lens. But you have to be quite close to the object. Else 70-200 is a good option.
If its indoor or low light - I like my 50 1.4 or even 35 1.8. Most of the time, you don't need to use flash.
