Nikon Best walkabout lens

Really depends on how you define walkabout? And what are you shooting.

For me - if its outdoor with ample lighting. 17-55 2.8 will be a great lens. But you have to be quite close to the object. Else 70-200 is a good option.

If its indoor or low light - I like my 50 1.4 or even 35 1.8. Most of the time, you don't need to use flash.

i've not used the Nikkor 17-55 before. So no comments.

But i've the Tamron 17-50 without motor and its quite sharp. And I also have the Nikkor AF-S 24-70, which is really really sharp!!!

Yes 17-55mm is indeed heavy but very good if you don't mind about the weight and COST. It is my primary lens for my D300, these 2 add together is damn heavy.

17-55 is a lovely, rather fast n sharp lens if you dun look at the cost ;p

however, if u like to take just a walkabout consider the 50mm f1.4 G/D, that is also gd for portraits shot

btw u didnt mention how much u're willingly to spend.. though i agree with the rest, at the end of the day, its the photographer that counts.. everyone has their own style to shoot

If you are solely using for portraits, get a 50mm and use the rest of the money to buy other stuffs.

yup, its quite noisy for the one without Built-in Motor.

Cannot comment on the BIM and VC versions. Though, i've read that the BIM version is slower AF.

Agree with DL-WC, get 50mm for portraits. You can get N 50 1.8, cheap and good lens

i have only one lens 24-70mm and i swear by it!!

wide enough to please and long when you need the reach.

plus the f2.8 gives you the shallow dof for portrait.

If u don't need that wide, then 2470 but I am still waiting for the 24105F4 VR2....

That's should be a very very usable range.

For me, it's no doubt 18-200VR. While the rest can argue about whether the quality is good or not, it's good enough for me, and my back. I can go around any part of the world with a D70, 18-200VR, 12-24 and that's it. I don't see any issues with my photos, I still got great (ok, great to me and I think not so bad for the others) photos out of it.

To me, any lens can be your walkabout lens - as long as you are happy with it. Who cares what others say - not that the lens quality is so bad that your photos will turn out bad... Heck if someone famous can do great photos with P&S, what more with any other cam. So pick up the one you are comfortable with (weight, price, focal length capability) and stick with it. Have more fun taking photos and seeing new things than to worry about is this lens good or bad - I don't think there is such thing as bad lens... If there is, it would have been out of market soon, as no one will pay for a bad lens.
