NIKON AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR - Official Thread

The E designation indicates the lens itself has a powered aperture (as does the 800mm f/5.6). Speculation has been that Nikon would eventually move from G to E type of aperture activation over time, as the demands of video make Nikon’s old mechanical style aperture changes slightly problematic.

For those asking on Tele-Coverters to be used.... Only Nikon Canada states it clearly :

Nikon Canada - you just look under the tab "Compatible with" and four TCs are shown: the TC-14E II & III, the TC-17E II and TC-20E III.

I'd stick with the MkIII versions where possible - better coatings n optical designs.

Truthfully, E lenses frustrate me to no end. I cannot use the PC-E lenses on any other bodies except Nkion ones.

ahhhh they locking you in to their system. :D

My take :

AGAINST :
- Some say - Its a bit too expensive except for special professional use. ( I actually thinks its ok... )
- For the price it better bloody well come with the tripod collar... first shop to incl this for free gets the sale.
- It MAY create fairly big blooms around Bright light sources in high contrast shots ( due frensel / DO lens. )
- Crap using the E class... should of kept it as a G class. ( sounds like I'm talking about a german car brand now.. )

FOR:
- Its sharper on paper.... Up with a 400MM F/2.8 almost!,
- Its A LOT lighter,
- Its much smaller,
- In principle it should have less color aberrations.
- The ultimate lens ( ensure high ISO capable Cam ) for sports events where lens length measured on a ruler by security are often limited to 200mm long... this is 147mm I believe.
- Great for video with the E class.

To add more to my comments above :

Electromagnetic (f/4.0E ) diaphragm mechanism is incorporated for enhanced stability in auto exposure control during continuous shooting even when the teleconverter is used (Not compatible with the D2 series, D1 series, D200, D100, D90, D80, D70 series, D3000, D60, D50, D40 series, 35mm film cameras)

OR it may also be considered more electronics to fail ??? :dunno: :embrass:

Looks like much shorter compatibility time frame. D3/D300/D7000 upwards.

I think it would be a very nice portrait lens.

Would be nice if CS Admin could let us play with the lens :)

Why will CS Admin have the lens??.... go to CES in Vegas or wait till next month and play with one a Nikon SG.

Or just place your orders at your local stores.

Once i read the first reliable reviews out there I may consider buying this beast. :D

What's already in your cabin is not considered as molest....it's already yours..you can do whatever you want :p

Was wondering how do I check the lens elements with the electronic aperture? I used to move the aperture lever or ring to open the aperture and see through the lens...

I'd say late FEB here.... but you wanna get your name down at your local stores.... I see this one having a global shortage in most of 2015. :D ;)

I'll place my order 3-6 months after stores have them... I never rush any purchase till real world in the field tests are out.
