I believe ever other consumer zoom will come out with VR because thats what beginners like to see and what non-professionals/amateurs would like to get the best out of their money.

hmm...guess you're right
its prolly one of those 'must-have's for consumers :sweatsm:

although personally, VR isn't a 'must' for me :)

Eh? Did anyone copy and paste wrongly? "Leather texture"?! (Last line)

Now we have the DX consumer zoom line-up
  • AF-S 18-55mm Mk 1 (D50 Kit)
  • AF-S 18-55mm Mk 2 (D40 Kit)
  • AF-S 18-55mm VR (D60 Kit)
  • AF-S 16-85mm VR
  • AF-S 18-70mm (D70 Kit)
  • AF-S 18-105mm VR (D90 Kit)
  • AF-S 18-135mm (D80 Kit)
  • AF-S 18-200mm VR
  • AF-S 55-200mm
  • AF-S 55-200mm VR

And the other DX lens parade
  • AF-D 10.5mm
  • AF-S 12-24mm
  • AF-S 17-55mm

Wow... 10 consumer zooms since the launch of the D70, 5 with Vibration Reduction

How many kit lenses do they need? It seems like there is a new kit lens with every new camera launch.

I prefer the timeless classics like the 24-70's. Or for DX, 17-55 2.8. Now that is a lens

and tell me how many newbies are willing to fork out that cash? :bsmilie:

Tru dat. :p

However Nikon could also play the game of 'corrupting' the n00bs with the BBB virus. Some affordable 'pro' glass could help.

Another manufacturer sells an adequate kit lens but tempts them with 'affordable' or lower priced pro glass, say 70-200 f/4 (no IS). Then after play with the f/4 already, the n00b thinks "Should I upgrade to 2.8 or IS or both".. and there you have it, the BBB virus in full swing :bsmilie:

sounds like the 18-200VR to me :D

-mid-range price
-VR
-great zoom range
-terrible aperture (damn...must BBB faster lens)
-relatively poor IQ (aiya, need to buy 17-55f2.8 + 70-200VR!!)

yup, a cocktail of BBB virus if you ask me :bsmilie:

What are you talking about? IQ is ok for the 18-200mm!
I've used the 18-200mm for a full scale shoot before :nono:

How does the 16-85mm Nikon compare with the Tamron lens 17-50mm in terms of lens construction and IQ?

chill! i was being sarcastic :)

it is indeed good (tried it before and was quite impressed) Just saying that for tech-addicts, the 18-200's IQ is 'poor' compared to the 70-200VR

Question of want, need and what you got in your wallet, cold hard cash or gold or even platinium card etc.

From kit lens to pro-range zoom to primes to the ultimate CZ lens. Where does it start and where does it end. I have seen folks who have gone all the way to the peak and then back to walking around in a D40 with kit lens and snapping happily around.

Just like for car, a young man who starts work and get a Suzuki Swift. He aspires to drive the 2litre executive saloon his boss is driving.

Car, house, camera and so forth. Never ending demand for more cash. This is what's driving the market economy.....

Well, those who buy the 70-200mm VR can also ask themselves if the 70-200mm can go down to 18mm....

Then they'll go buy a 17-55mm (DX) or 24-70mm (FX) and then they'll realise they need a 2nd body etc etc....

They might as well make photography their career :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

Ok.. I OT-ed to much here.

That is actually true. There is a curiosity (and not a bad one either) to discover what lies at the top of the hill.

I have bought all the way to the 1-series (on another system) and discovered that I didn't really like it. Good thing I bought 2ndhand, so sold it onwards and went back to their midrange full frame offering which I found more suitable and value for money for what I do. I must be the only one who DOESN'T covet their 1-series nowadays. (everybody thinks I'm crazy, but the wallet is very happy with that decision ;)

So the answer is really what satisfies you. The 18-200 is a credible do-it-all lens that may be all that a particular photographer wants. Yet for others it is BBB all the way to Broke Broke Broke ;)
