It seems that compared with the new Sigma 12-24, the Nikon has only slightly better sharpness and constrast and is abit faster but in terms of chromatic aberation, both lens are about the same. I am only thinking of the price premium for the Nikon over the Sigma just for the above mentioned advantages, seems a wee bit too high to pay.

There are heated debates between the 2 lenses in dpreview. One example is this one:

Though there are many subjective qualitative comments on the two lenses, there are also a number of important objective differences. Some of these are:
1. price
2. size/weight
3. one is DX-only, the other is full frame
4. one has a flat front element, so can use normal protective glass. the other has rounded protruding front element and cannot use normal protective glass.
etc etc
But I for one subscribe to the idea that in the end, it boils down to the photographer. We cannot be forever stuck with arguing on paper. Just decide, buy, then take good pictures with it!

I really have a lot of fun with it, and have never ever left home without it. It was a god-send when I went to china recently, as it managed to capture the China that i wanted to see on my photos.
The other reasons I chose the nikon was that I could use filters with it (77mm threadsize) and also a lens cap, which the sigma could not, being of a popeye design.

Maybe to help you understand which one u need, u might want to bring them both out for a test run. U will never know which one u will have an affinity to. For me, the nikon has melted my heart....

As for the issue on filter, note that the Sigma is 82mm size and by right cannot take normal screw on filters. If you insist on holding the filter by hand while taking the image, imagine the cost of a 82mm CirPol filter. The alternative is Cokin or Lee filter system which will more than wipe out the cost differential.

in addition.... the Sigma though being 82mm.. doesnt have a filter thread.. lol.. so yes you would have to handhold it..
As for a Lee Filter system.. as long as there is not thread.. you will also not be able to use this system..

Hey, anyone going to shoot fireworks this Sunday?
After weeks of deliberating and thinking, finally bought the Nikon 12-24 DX from Lords for $1620. Looking forward to test the lens this weekend in Hong Kong.
Next target: 70-200mm VR. Then I think I am done (financially that is!).
BTW, while in HK, the 70-200 VR was quoted for only $2560 compared to $2950 or more in Singapore. Since all Nikon lens have international warranty, it should be fine. I can sent the lens to Nikon Singapore for servicing, right?
