This thread is about Nikkors
Shush about Tamron "trinity" or Tokina "trinity" :bsmilie:

Wahh... Bro, strike 4D/ Toto/ Big Sweep top prize is it?? I've done a rough calculation, and even based on Grey Set pricing, also need to pay bout $6K - $7K...
Anyway  for you. Maybe can add 1 more to the collection a 200-400mmand you'll not need to buy anymore zoom lenses for the rest of your photography life, unless you're not getting another Nikkor...:bsmilie:
No lah.. no play 4D....
I truly believe that the photographer is the real reason behind good pics and that great lenses like those that i said though play a part, does not guarantee great pics...
I am only an amatuer, sometimes i don't even dare to post my pictures here. But i reckon since this is a hobby that I like, may as well invest in it now...
How about 18-55 55-200
or 18-70 70-300
Heh. Budget setups that cover all the range you need
Unfortunately no f/4 variants like what you find in a particular competitor's lineup or lenses.
Mine developed the screeching sound too after awhile which did not impair anything until my AFS mechanism developed problem. This was replaced by NSC at $750. The screeching noise wasn't resolved even though I informed but subsequently at my insistance was resolved. Reason was the grease was drying up or has dried up owing to low usage and in the dry cabinet. I shoot about 4 to 5 times a year and which so many lenses and bodies to rotate, I reckon I did ask for it. Now I 'exercise' them once a month at home to keep them 'healthy'.Im not sure what the salesman is trying to tell you, but it is my experience and hearsay from others that the motor in AFS lenses may sometimes give way to wear and tear and malfunction, giving rise to a screeching noise when focussing.
At present, it appears from more hearsay that the screeching sound is a prelude to a total malfunction of the focussing mechamism.
I have a 28-70 lens that was fine when I bought it, and later on, developed the screeching sound. Having the sound alone does not impair the function of the focussing mechanism, although it may be a bit irritating and noisy.
For my lens, it is still functioning fine, and after some time, it miraculously recovered itself, now there's no more screeching sound. I have not reached the total malfunction stage.
A quote from NSC shows that it would cost aout S$800.00 to fix the AFS mechanism.
Hope this information gives more assistance.
Yah.. that's a concern for me as well.... but I am trying to avoid Dx lenses now as I waiting for a full frame from Nikon...

I was also told by Nikon that the screeching noice was due to dry grease. This might be true is some cases, but in mine, the SWM did fail, and on 2 of my lenses after they started screeching. Luckily one was still under warranty.
If the lens is screeching, don't buy it. It might be dry grease or it might be prelude to total failure.
BTW, the 28-70 is a great lens.
