Nikon 70-200mm f4 G VRIII Next week ;)

question to those who own this glass.

is it parfocal? ;)

How about 95% parfocal :bsmilie:

I think it was intended to be, but I notice slight misfocus.

oh...at what focal length did it misfocus? :o

I released the lens already, but as far as I know when I zoomed from 70mm to 200mm it wasn't 100% in focus. But again I remembered correctly, other lens that claimed parfocal may also be like that.

I can confirm from my f4 copy... lens breathing is there and I think I did not notice it much or does not bother me is that.. it narrows the FOV instead of widen. So at min distance focus, the FOV is narrower, and as you focus to infinity.. it widens.

And yes.. as you zoom or unzoom.. the lens will misfocus by 5mm

Focus Breathing.. BTW this is just a test video in a very crude way.. please dun complaint that it is shot with a m4/3 or PnS camera.. :P

Initial is focus at infinity.. and move to min focus distance.

Here is the video for misfocus.

Initial is at 70mm close to min focus distance.. and zoom to 200mm. Focus is set on the middle of the Nikon wording

70mm almost 100% crop on focus pt

200mm less than 100% crop on focus pt with the focus unchange from above

Yup there is a slight misfocus even for parfocal lens iirc, because there's no perfect parfocal lens.

@avsquare - thanks for the clarification ;)

@bomby929 - thanks for the effort with the videos! ;)

Got mine tis evening. Hopefully can find some spare time in the coming holidays to use it :)

Thought of getting the tripod collar. Went to Nikon yesterday and was told to order. Left my contact with them. $80. Anyone knows where to find one in the shops around...
At last d item arrived. When I am deciding whether to sell the lens.

Any particular reason for decide to sell if you don't mind to share? I mean any image quality or built quality issue?

No particular reason. Its a terrific lens. Just that I have basically no time or energy to go out and shoot. So my 24-120 f4 is enough. I just sold the 28-300, so thios sould be the next in line.

Put me in your list if you decided to let go your lens :)

Nikon just replied say wrong pricing for the collar, not 80 bucks, it is SGD225.

too expensive. IIRC JP was just about $100. Maybe I can mass buy and sell for $150 here LOL :bsmilie:

Hi all,

I have read in some reviews that when wide open at 200mm, the edges are a bit soft, need to stop down to F8 to get sharp photos. Is this the case?

Appreciate if owner of this lens can share some photos where the focussing point is set at the extreme edge at wide open.

Many thanks.

I will try to do some shots this weekend but as I am using a D7k, the edges will be much sharper compare to a fx I presume.

Thanks radonsg. Looking forward to see the photos.

4 quick shots hand held with focus point @ the 4 extreme corner of the focus grid wide open,
test - a set on Flickr

Thanks again radonsg. However, I can't tell even when I look at flickr full screen how sharp it is. Since you have all the four shots, can you tell me if it is sharp or soft?

Many thanks.
