Nikon 55-200 VR Test Shots

The X-axis is the distance from the center of the lens, so at "0", it is measuring the center of the pic. Y-axis is the sharpness, 1 is the best.

Regarding the four lines, the S and M represent the horizontal and vertical axes of the lens under measurement. The 10 and 30 means how many lines of data per mm.

Hope this helps:)

The 55-200 VR is a plastic mount right?

Thanks lsisaxon and lastboltnut.

I was thinking of getting 18-200 originally but I didnt get it due to the lack of funds. Now that this came up, i was thinking it would make a good complement to a 18-70 kit lens. Would this make a good replacement? The price for the 55-200 is really good man...

its a trades-off of $ vs conveniency. Performance wise, 18-200 is a rare lens which can do this much with 11x zoom.

Thanks lsisaxon and lastboltnut.

AF speed and sharpness is about the same as the Nikon 70-300 VR.

Sounds too good to be true... Thought this lens uses the "lower end" SWM motor which might be slower? Doesn't allow immediate MF overide as well...

# A compact telephoto zoom lens featuring VR and SWM at an affordable price
# Vibration Reduction (VR) offers the equivalent of shutter speeds 3 stops faster for more flexible hand-held shooting
# A wide 55-200mm (picture angle equivalent to 82.5-300mm lens in the 35mm format) 3.6x zoom range offers high quality images
# An ED glass element
# Compact SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for quiet autofocusing

Doesn't say anything about it being a "fake" SWM.

Hi,

Was doing some reading.. Wat does "3 stops faster" really mean?

Thanks

If you shoot at 200mm, the "handholdable shutter speed rule" will tell you that you need a minimum shutter speed of 1/200s to prevent hand shake from blurring your pic (of course, YMMV).

With VR on, in this case, offering 3 stops of correction. You can afford to shoot at a shutter speed 3 stops slower and still get the same (or approximately the same) sharpness as if you were shooting at 1/200s. In this case, the slowest you can shoot at would probably be 1/15s if I'm not wrong.

YMMV, depending on handholding technique etc.

Wow... a fantastic lens at this price

3 stops...
1/200 -> 1/100 -> 1/50 -> 1/25.

1/15 might be a bit challenging. 1/30 is more likely to give a good shot. ;p

Just got the lens yesterday...wonderful! Able to shoot at 1/20 shutter speed with VR at 200mm without thinking, even up to 1/5 it is still possible (VR plus steady hands). This lens is really great buy for a budget zoom.

Will post some sample pics after my exams!
