Ya, this lens can do pretty good close up. It has a magnification of 1:2~:)

I think you meant 1:4 right?

1:2 magnification would make it a micro-nikkor (and a dream lens for me)

Hey, was wondering which of these lenses you guys would prefer? The sigma has an awesome 2 extra stops but supposedly it's a little soft wide open and has a common focusing issue and also APS-C sensors only. The Nikkor on the other hand, is said to be sharp wide open, and plus it's compatible with 35mm and full frame. Views?

For D40/D40X/D60 users, it's clearly Sigma 30/1.4 because of HSM.
For the rest, I think Nikkor 35/2 would be a better bet.
For D200/D300/D700/D2 series/D3 series users who don't mind manual focusing, AiS 35/1.4 is the way to go! ;p

Opps, you are right~ :embrass:

I got fooled by wrong info as well till i check Nikon site...

Yup, i agree.
D40s are handicap without the AF-S lens.
Sigh..

Dont sigh so fast la, practice manual focusing...

Some great lenses like those from Carl Zeiss, gota manual focus even on a D3 what....:)

amen. i am using a D40x too. MF on my 50mm 1.8 at the recent cosplay

no problem de la.. you be a bite slower. i feel like going prime. I am not sure. so flicker man. looking to upgrade to a D300 hopefully in a year time

Do not buy sigma 30mm ,terrible hot spots. Cannot be used for infrared red. Aperture from F5.6 very bad hot spots. Waste of money . Can get better lenses.

What about visible light photography? I don't think many of us do IR.

Look on the bright side :light: ... it's just D300 not D700. :kok:

Wow , the current poll result is 48 vs 26 in favour of the Nikon 35mm....i'm quite surprised actually... as i thought that the 30mm has a cult following....

don't bet on it... wait till he gets his hand on a D3..... it will be SARs all over again...

Finally manage to change my sigma 30mm to nikon 35mm. Sigma cannot make it IR. Dump the hotspots lenses.

But is the nikon good and sharp wide open?

Despite all these, for mine I found that it struggled with distances greater than 1.5m, with some very obviously preferred sweet spot distances. This is always a regret I have for this potentially great lens. It is also because of all the issues coupled with its potential that has made it sort of a cult lens.

I don't have issues with focusing with the Sigma 30/1.4 with > 1.5m. I always take full length portraits of 2 persons with this, but perhaps 70% of the time within 2m. But the lens is on my D70, don't really use this on the D200. Been using for more than 100 weddings easily already, so don't think there is an issue with a good copy.

I just showed bigdaystudio last nite the sharpness of it @ 1.4 on peanuts, focusing also zhun zhun. No problem dah. :D

The only problem is that the sigma coating peels off. Mine is already 70% naked.

I saw a 30mm all peeled off... actually looks quite cool... the metallic look ;)

Yeah...but too bad its silvery metal. Gun metal would have been cooler.

Ok, you gave me an idea, i'll shave it all off. muhahah.!! :bsmilie::bigeyes:
