Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 AF-S VR Micro

Yup there is a Nikkor 60/2.8 (AFS, AFD & AF versions). The 105 gives you longer working distance when compare to the 60. This means that for the same magnification, the subject is further away from the lens with the 105 then the 60. If your macro shooting is mainly on still life then the 60 is ok. Otherwise it is better to get the 105, as the insects will be scared off long before you can get too close. Btw there is also an AFD 200/4 micro.

Yup that is correct. 45mm is actually *very* close, only 4.5cm away. You can't take insects with such short working distance. Here is the summary of the approx. working distance (at 1:1) of various nikkor micro lenses:

AFD60 9cm
AFS60 4.5cm
AFD105 13.6cm
AFS105 15.4cm
AFD200 26cm

Food is actually consider close up & not macro if you're shooting the whole plate. How far you need to stand depends on how big (or small) you want the magnification to be. If you intend to take something like those displayed at the hawker center stalls, you don't actually need a macro lens to do that.

With your D90, you can AF with all AFS, AFD, and AF. The difference between AFD and AF is that there is a microchip inside the AFD that sends the focusing distance info back to the camera, for "3D matrix fill flash". The AFS of course has this chip inside as well.

If you don't have specific reasons, my opinion is that it is better to get the AFS versions.

But be aware that the AFS versions don't like TC, they don't work well with TC - from AF point of view, MF is ok.

I have used all except the AFD200, still have the AFS60, AFD105 and AFS105.

TC = teleconverter, which is used to multiply the focal length. E.g. if 1.4x TC is used with the 105, it's focal length will become 147mm.

Given a particular lens with fixed focal length, the working distance varies according to the magnification you want. You'll need to stand closer if you want larger magnification, and further away for lesser magnification (yes using your words it is something like a "zoom", except that you move your camera around to "zoom"). The working distances given in my post above are for 1:1 (life size) reproduction.

Close ups simply refer to shots that have less magnification then macro. If you're just shooting food, it is not necessary to get a macro lens. You can get pretty descent shots with a diopter lens + a tele zoom lens. See here for my explanation on using diopter lens (close up filters).
