Night Festival 2013

May I know what lens you using and what is the setting? Did you zoom? I didnt managed to get a good shot with my 18-135mm, probably got my setting wrong too

I am using Canon 5D II which is a full frame camera, the lens used is EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS, for Pic #9 & 10 no pp just do a batch resize and sharpen, no crop.

That night was very crowded, in some case I need to use the 70-200mm lens.

Pic#9 : ISO 1000, 1/200 Sec., f/4, 0 EV at 93mm

Pic#10: ISO 3200, 1/125 Sec., f/4, 0 EV at 200mm

The logic is to decide what shutter speed need to capture a clear image, then use the lowest ISO if possible, in the case Pic#9 I managed to lower the ISO to 1000 to achieve a low noise level. In the case of Pic#10 I still can accept noise level at ISO 3200 due to bright spot light.

As mention you are using lens 18-135mm must be a 1.6 crop DSLR, convert to my FF should be 28.8-216mm lens. For pic#9 and #10 is 93mm and 200mm which is still within your lens range of 28.8-216mm. :)

What lens did you use for this?

I am using Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 IS L for both photo Pic#13 & 14, which there was no pp or crop just do a batch resize and sharpen. :)

Thank you for viewing and hope that you enjoyed the shooting for that day. :)

full manual mode too..? 0 ev is not possible at any other mode too

The f2.8 probably helped too.. ;)

Thank you for the kind comments, no flash was allowed for the performance, it must be the LED light from the photographer opposite taking video.

Thank you for viewing.

I was using the shutter priority mode to adjust the shutter speed depend on the performer's movement's speed, I was using the 70-200mm f/4 IS L during the performance and wish I have the f/2.8 version for the night. 0 EV that mean I was not using the exposure compensation for the photo. For event performance shooting, my style is to fix the Metering mode to Evaluative metering and make exposure compensation if necessary for the lighting conditions. :)

Oh wow.. my bad.. missed the f4. Awesome job with the f4 then..

Noted on the ev.. one question.. did u shoot in raw or Just JPEG to keep the writing of data fast?

Thanks again for comments. I wish I had the f/2.8 version which produce very nice result.

The performance is not the fast sport type which you might need to shoot like the machine gun, average memory card should be able to handle the writing of RAW file. I found that the Canon 5D II which is a FF have better dynamic range compare to my 40D when I PP adjusting the curve. Shot in RAW always give you better image quality and give you more feasibility when PP.

Normally, I shoot RAW + small L during sunset landscape shooting, for others I shoot in JPG but I will need to check the result of the white balance is correct before continue. If the WB is off to my like then will perform some custom WB to make correction.

On issue on EV, usually I set the Metering mode to Evaluative metering, depend on the lighting background I will compensate the exposure to ensure the correct exposure on the main subject(s). Some people use spot metering to achieve the result, but if your main subjects are constant running around then it will be difficult.

#25 is such a great shot. Makes me want to go tomorrow. :)

According to the Singapore Night Festival 2013 booklet indicate that the last performance of Starlight Alchemy: Redux is last week 23 & 24 August 2013. Good news according to the latest information they will be performing this coming Friday and Saturday : Starlight Alchemy: Flow Jam

Starlight Alchemy is back with their signature LED performance pieces for the second weekend of the Singapore Night Festival. Using various LED tools, witness the amazing feats by this unique and eclectic group of artists. This performance will also include a free play and jam session where visitors to the Singapore Night Festival can try their hand at playing with the LED manipulation tools used by the artists.

According to above the performance will be using LED tools not fire, maybe like the Pic#1 I think. Be prepare, it will be pack with people, last week during shooting 80 percent of the time I could not get a clean shoots through gaps between heads.

Happy Shooting. :)
