Hi all,

I will be hiking Mount Rinjani soon and would love to do night star/astrophotography during the night on the mountain.
I have a few lens which I'm having difficulties deciding which to bring for the hike (considering the weight I have to carry Up the mountain).

Below are the lens I have:
- Canon 18-200mm (F3.5 - lowest aperture)
- Canon 70-200mm (F2.8)
- Canon 10-22mm (F3.5 - lowest aperture)
- Canon 50mm (F1.4)

This will be my first time trying on night astrophotography, which lens would you all advise to bring.
I am thinking to just take 1 lens with me due to the weight I have to consider.

Any other tips on camera settings will also be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hi,

I only have the 4 lens above, hahaha...
Hence, can only use 1 out of the 4.

Not sure exactly what are the photos you would like to take... I'm just guessing based on what I interpret from your question

When you mention 'night star / astrophotography', something like the picture Ah Keong shared comes to my mind, some foreground mountain and the wide view of stars / milky way if it is in the correct position. If that is the case then I would bring the 10-22mm to achieve that angle of view, but as I'm also kiasu I would also bring the 50mm f1.4 to take portraits or close up of stuff. But yes if can only bring 1 lens I will bring the 10-22mm.

That's just me, if you have different ideas of 'night star / astrophotography' (maybe you want a close up of the nebula or something else I don't know...) you may want to elaborate so the astro experts can guide you better.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Awesome!
Yeah, am thinking of some foreground mountain with wide view of stars/milky way as I will be camping on the mountain for 1 of the night before the summit climb to top of mt.Rinjani.
I am also considering 10-22mm due to the wide angle view too, the only take back is the aperture.

I won't be doing closeup of nebula or etc as this is only my first take on the milky way/astrophotography.
Hence, will be concentrating on getting a good photo composition. =D

I would suggest bring 10-22mm or/& 50mm. 10-22mm will bring more depth to your photo, but you might want to sacrifice with your ISO. Try with max F3.5 and different ISO setting to bring up your MY. As for 50mm,like what Thoongeng said try for MY portrait and also play with different aperture setting. At least you will experience later what is the different if is using F1.4, F2.8.

Hi,

Cool, thanks very much for your advises.
Will take the 10-22mm and 50mm along.

Awesome!!! =D

I would second the 10-22 mm lens especially when u want to take some foreground with the Milkyway!
It also depends if you are using a full frame camera. Otherwise, your 50mm lens really has an effective 75mm focal length which really becomes quite unsuitable for landscaping shots with the MW. Have fun!
