Manual mode is not meant for inexperienced photographers. So it makes sense to allow for more customizable options, especially when the limitation is not physical, but can be easily resolved in the next firmware upgrade.

a new user would be overwhelmed by the 1/3 steps of customization. if you get my drift, which you obviously haven't

an option that allows ISO step of 1/3, 1/2 and 1 stop... Many cameras have this option.. it is not rocket science.. Having more options is always good

While checking ISO performance on another alpha model, I noticed that while there was only a small amount of difference between ISO 100 and ISO 200, ISO 125 and ISO 160 actually looked worse than ISO 200. Same thing between ISO 200 and ISO 400; 250 and 320 are worse than ISO 400!

I am not sure this is true anymore but long time ago this used to be true with older 6-10mp cams. i believed the newer sensor has analog ISO from 100-6400 (at least for 16mp sony sensor) with the use of full 14-bit adc and anything higher use scaling which is digital.. theorectically, you can use EV to simulate the ISO values provided the data has not been clipped.

Since we are on this one, I'm hoping Sony put in Auto ISO (at 1/3 stop) for Manual Mode in their next firmware update This way I can set aperture and shutter speed i want and let the meter decide appropriate ISO. This will make 5N near faultless for using with manual/legacy lenses.

I wonder if that's why the in-between ISO settings come up in auto but are not user-selectable in your cam. Maybe Sony figures that their target users of the product won't notice the difference.

Same with the GH2, all multiples of base ISO 160 look better than the inbetweens below. E.g. 320 shows less noise than 250.

LOL ! :bsmilie: ...coming from a background where I can generally only choose between ISO100, ISO200 and ISO400 after every 24 or 36 shots.
It's a dream, having the option of ISO from 100 to 12800 for every shot.
