The 50mm 1.4 is a screw driven lens.... there is no af at all on nex. How did you get even slow af?

my bad i meant 50mm F1.8

Cost. 50mm 1.1 is much more expensive than the 40mm 1.4

I am new to photography. NEX 5 is the first camera that I own. I reckon I should try the 40mm 1.4 first as an entry to manual focusing.
