NEX 5 Battery Life

Bro
Price so low you can trust or not? I am worried more for safety issues rather than for performance and endurance. If there are problems these nameless brands will not issue a recall nor will they inform the users of the problems. But of course at such a low price also tempted to buy one for backup . ;p

I hope the battery will not short-circuit or explode in the cam. Don't understand why people can spend $1k on a camera but want to save on batteries. By saving that few tens of dollars and if the cam really short-circuit or explode is it worth it? If you are injured in the process, is it worth it? :dunno:

I got similar one from ebay as well at a similar price. Mine was the one in a very genuine looking Sony package.

Unfortunately, capacity was around 60% of the battery that came with the camera (based on a video recording rundown test I did). Also weighed just 35g vs. 55g of the original. But otherwise, no issues and battery gauge works.

But can't complain given the price :).
I guess it works as a spare battery.

im sure there are hundreds of thousands of 3rd party batteries in all brands of cameras in the world, but so far I have not heard of a single case of a camera exploding or short circuiting due to their usage before.

The only complain is probably it doesnt last as long as the originals. But then even if it lasts 60% (from jnujnu's test), it cost 5 times cheaper, so buying 2 of these batteries will last more, and yet cost only 40% of an original's price.

Quite worth it I would say.

Let's hope none of these mishaps happens.

Just to share that a friend told me that he got a 3rd party battery for his cam also and it turned very hot while charging. He immediately remove it and try to let it cool down to avoid any explosion. In the process he suffered a shock, guess there is some leakage from the battery. From then on, he never get any 3rd party batteries.

Hi
How did he managed to get shocked? The battery case is plastic and only the connectors are metal which you will unlikely touch. Unless some sort of static build up occurs?

I guess as far as risk is concerned its up to the owner. One thing is very sure though. OEM types always over specify their rating and almost always underperform. i.e. an OEM rating may be 1500mAH, higher than the original 1200mAH but in reality, it runs out faster as is the case above. But as a backup batt, they are value for money. In my case, i almost never need it in Singapore...only if I am overseas which is seldom. I got a backup battery pack for my Fuji F200EXR and till date only used it once overseas. I charge it once a month or so to keep it healthy. :)

I'm with you on this bro, had my fair share of cheap OEM batteries, I've got battery that overheated, bloated up and got stuck in the camera, battery that is not a perfect fit in the camera such that when you mount the camera on a tripod, it switches itself off and cannot be switched on again...

Not gonna bother with oems even for cheapo PnS cameras.

Not sure how he got the shock too. He just mentioned that he got a shock while removing the battery from the charger.

I am glad that so far we do not have much mishaps from 3rd party batteries. Personally I would rather be safe than sorry.

Good for you bro.

I recently went to Tokyo Disneyland, and took around 500-600+ pics plus a couple of videos with full battery.... Updated the NEX-5 firmware before the trip.

I think I'm quite satisfied with the performance of the NEX-5 battery so far....

500-600 shots?! That's so totally unbelievable.... not doubting you, but your estimations... it's beyond physics. Or chemistry for that matter.

Did a recount just now. Exact no is 531 Pictures for that day. With 2 Full HD movies.

Anyone else can give their attestation for your NEX-5 battery life ?

Wow :o Using overclock battery ? ? ?

I believe possible, clocked almost 500 shots and movie (fireworks only) with 70% over the weekends at universal studio. MF only, not sure if MF helps.

My experience in a colder environment, about 450 shots tops with several pano images and about 10 HD movie clips (fully autofocus) . :)

So long as you don't constantly review pictures and use the flash, yeah, 500+ shots is easy.
