Anyone here has recommendations for lenses which can take decent close-ups of plants, products and insects for M4/3? This is for my recently purchased GX7.

I know there are specialized macro lenses available, but they are upward of $700 to even over 1k.

My budget is at max 300.

An affordable way is to buy the Panny 45-200mm lens which can give you a close up view of flowers, plants and products which have a reasonable size, e.g. orchids. The lens gives a decent bokeh. For insects you would need an additional attachment lens like the Raynox DCR 250 which can be purchased in the B&S section for about 80-90

Look for the 12-50 Olympus kit lens. Should be in your budget when bought in B&S

Newbie question here, but how do I know what's the zoom ratio of my lens?

Thank you. That lens look like it would suit much of my needs, I could use a decent telephoto lens afterall.

Good pricing too.

You can try legacy lens on Evil-bay... you need to buy an adapter also and it is manual focus. But, the total should be within your budget unless you going for Leica

DP review just scored the GX7 a 79%. Seems that they found rainbows in the viewfinder and didn't like that IS didn't work while composing. I still find it unique to have a M43 camera in rangefinder design and a built in EVF so it's a keeper for me.

Quite an expected and respectable score.

Seems that DP listed quite a few more issues than what I had experienced, especially the higher possibility of diffraction & softer images in brightly lit situations in auto and P mode. I am mainly a M and A mode user so this was an non issue. If only I had spent more time with it before letting it go.

The IS issues was expected but I'm appreciative that Pana is beginning to produce bodies with built in IS though they r still considerably far from Oly's 5 axis IS. Pana will improve on this I'm sure.

Going back to the EVF , the placement and usage issues I had with it was one of the main reasons I sold the GX7. I'll still gladly use the VF4 or even the LCD to compose over the EVF in the GX7 but this is always user subjective. Having a good EVF that one can choose to remove or apply is more useful to me than being stuck with a not as good EVF.

Nonetheless , it's really a worthy upgrade from the GX1.

The GX7 did beat out the EP-5 by 1% hehe

To be fair to Panny, their basic design is behind lens stabilisation, so if you use Panny lenses rather than other brands, the lens stabilisation works fine during composing and that complaint goes away.

Having used a top mounted EVF on the NEX-5N for years, for me, it became an unacceptable ergonomic compromise no matter how good the EVF. Anyway, I expect the EP-5 to have a short life and the EP-6 to have the viewfinder integrated. Finally Oly would have produced the camera for me.

To each his/her own of course :) so far though I've been sticking to Panny for their zooms , the 12-35 specifically until the 12-40 came out.

But it's quite a statement to make saying that EP5 will having a short life and EP6 to have an integrated viewfinder. Doesn't sound like a sound marketing strategy to do so but oh well , I m just a user.

GM1 is already out touting GX7's sensor hence best is simply shoot and make the best of what we have. Who knows GX8 might be released next year heh.

For the EP series to be competitive with the GX7 and NEX, they need the integrated viewfinder. It's not just having to take it on and off, but you're limited to the little pop up flash when the viewfinder is on. It makes sense for Oly to quickly get the E-P6 out quickly, the "shutter shock" or whatever issue not withstanding (GX7 doesn't seem to have the problem it seems)

I'm going to give up the EM-5 for the GX7, but the main reason is the way one reviews taken shots in the EVF. With the EM-5, you have to press a few rubbery buttons to get playback into the EVF. With the NEX and GX7, whatever mode you are in switches over to the EVF when you lift it to your eye. With the EM-5, it switches into shooting mode. I tried an EM-1 recently and it still does that, but there is one change which has made it workable for me. That is if you press play while holding it to your eye, it will go to playback in the viewfinder where the EM-1 would immediately switch to the LCD. Not perfect but acceptable.

Called various shops, not all of them have the body-only package and prices do vary.

Went to amazon.co.jp and surprise - GX7 went under 800 USD:bsmilie:
It's always advisable to buy it new in Japan if you can.

Just wondering whether should I ship gx7 from US. There will not have any warranty I guess

If you shoot video, this may be an issue as US is a NTSC and you will record at 1080p /60/30 instead of 1080p /50/25. Flicker may occur as Singapore is using PAL and our freq 50hz.

Warranty is not valid in SG.

But I have read about Amazon selling its own warranty against accidents and spills, anyone tried it before ?

B&H and Adorama have their own too.. i asked before.. Basically if your cam has a fault, you need to call a 1800 number in the US and report it. If they think its really a defect, you will be given authorisation to fix the cam in Singapore. Then you pay first and claim back the $$ against your policy.. something like that IIRC..

Cant it be changed in the settings?

Nope.. Panny sells models that are region specific.

Like most Sony cameras. The big two Japanese consumer electronic giants still live in the past, pretty annoying. :|
