Usually, the picture looks better if using ambient light as the main illumination.
However, that is provided the surrounding is bright enough. If it is not bright enough, a flash would be necessary. That's why so many pple uses flash.
You mentioned that the pictures looked better with flash off, but some pictures are blur right? That is an indication that the surrounding is not bright enough, such that the camera have to select a lower shutter speed (if on auto) to allow for sufficient exposure, hence the blurred picture due to subject movement or handshake.
In general (if not using flash), use the max aperture that the lens can offer. Set ISO to max ( max acceptable, subject to user preference ), and let the camera decide the shutter speed. You can try ISO 1600 and reduce to 800 or lower, but if the picture turns blurry, up the ISO again.
That is if flash has to be avoided at all cost.. But the recommendation is, just take advantage of the flash and put it to good use.
I'm using a Sony Alpha 230 with 2 lenses.. a 18-55mm and a 75-300mm with external flash but half the time unused...becasue somehow the pictures without flash looked better than those with..
a great number of the pics taken were also blurred..i kind of forgot what aperture and shutter speed settings i used..i read from somewhere that incorrect settings on these 2 would result in blurred pictures as a result of insufficient lighting... could anyone advise on the right range of aperture and shutter speed settings to use?
Apparently i didn't need to use my external flash..when i set the camera to no flash the picture turns out better..probably i will keep the settings that way and tweak the white balance as someone earlier suggested..the only time i use flash at SIN was in the darker spots like the Garage R booth where there was no on stage lighting..some pics were too bright also..maybe someone else's flash came on at the same time and made things so much brighter..lol
For 1st 3 shots you used 18-55 right? And what mode did you use? Next time, try to take the focusing on the eye and half press the shutter button and bring it to frame. If you use the 75-300, the focusing will be very long under the dim light. But after all, newbies, still acceptable.
Just a good tip for event without prime lens or ext flash, try to use 18mm (to get max f) and use ISO400-ISO800. Sony NR is good at ISO1600. Try not to touch ISO3600 unless seriously needed (best shoot RAW when you need to use ISO3600 and then use noise ninja). Use manual mode if possible. SuperSteadyShoot can hold up to normal shaky of 1/20s - 1/15s. Try not to go beyond than 1/15s and try to use f3.5 all the time if possible. So you need to come nearer to the subjects to get a good framing/cropping.
