Can you guys please please help me out here, I have read the sticky and according to that my camera should be able to take Colour IR shots with long exposure times (can someone clarify exactly how long)

and what is the best method to get the best results with this camera/filter?

Thank you in advance for any help..

Yes, 350D is able to take color IR....but long exposure. you are talking about 20-25s in a f8-f11 setting (ISO 100).

Your question here is rather vague. What do you mean by best method and best result? as far as I know, with Hoya R72, it can be only 1 method.

1) take white balance with filter screw on.
2) set to CWB
3) compose your shot without filter (With tripod).
4) screw in filter and autofocus
5) fire off and WAIT.......
6) Take the shot and PS (check out ark19's signature)

Why dun you join us in one of our outing to see for yourself (hope the rainy season will soon be over).

Thank you so much for your reply..

the main thing I don't understand is setting th white balance, I have read the thread in the sticky for setting the CWB for the 300D and would expect the 350D to be done the same, but how long of an exposure will I need for this shot?

I would love to join one of your outings, only thing is i am in the UK. :(

Just set ur DC to Program mode ;)
Btw, for CWB, u do not need to use tripod. Just mount the filter, frame shot on brightly lit grass and set the CWB.
Only need to use tripod when you are taking actual shots :)

Thank you for your help guys.. hopefully have a go at some IR piccy's this weekend (weather permitting)

When actually taking the composed picture what mode do I need to set the camera to P, AV, TV or Manual ?

Thank you

what I would go for is Manual mode....trial and error to find the correct exposure. for a start, maybe a f8 in 25s ISO 100. from there....do the compensation.

Hope it help. again...get your white balance right first...that will help you in your post processing.

Do show us your work.

How will i know that the white balance is even close to correct?

ok i am facing the same problem.. the thing is i snap a shot .. it takes it .. (QUICKLY) and my screen remains BLACK.. the grass doesnt show up .. neither does the sky.. so i take a 30 Sec exposure and a few things appear in deep red.. THE CWB needs a bit more explaining..

I'll try to help here.

"1. Make sure your White Balance is on Auto (AWB)
2. Point at some brightly lit green leaves or grass or the blue sky.
3. Take a picture!
4. Select MENU.
5. In Menu, under the "CAMERA" Icon, select "CUSTOM WB".
6. In "CUSTOM WB", Select that image of green leaves/grass or blue sky you
just took. Press "SET"
7. Now select your White Balance Selection and select the ICON for "CUSTOM WHITE BALANCE" which is that "rectangle floating above 2 triangle" icon.
"

Basically you install filter, point at grass then shoot. Yes, there will be NO IMAGE coming up after that. You should see some form of indication if the white balance is successful, on Nikon system u would see "GOOD", I expect something similar on the Canon side.

If it were correct, you can try taking a random image of anything. If there is still a red cast over everything, it means you did not set white balance properly and you should try again.

thankyou :) Canon doesnt seem to have that functionality of saying the WBS is good :/ unfortunate.. but the red cast is still there on the pictures.. which means i need to experiment a bit more .. going to do that and post my results for further guidance.

after you have taken a shot for the white balance, you will use that image to set as CWB. that is point#6. have you missed out that step?

You should also try different shots with different expouseres and see what suits you best, keep in mind that photoshop can't read CWB properly so you should use (at least i do) the program that my Canon 40D brought that its call digital photo professional or someting like that than i transform in TIFF and open in PS with different colors, ah this just needs to be done if you are shooting in RAW if you are shooting Jpeg it should be fine.

u have to ensure that the white blance shot is well exposed. Check the histrogam .. peak middle or to the right

when IR outing ?.. long time never meet bros/sis here !!!
