Newbie question - when to use mamual mode

It is recommended to use Manual mode when taking Fireworks, bcos camera cannot focus the fireworks properly. It might foucs on the wrong subject in the sky and the fireworks which is the main subject will get blur.

oh.....that is exposure compensation. tks, will start shooting mamual mode from now on.

In manual mode, it acts as a light meter. In aperture or shutter priority mode, it acts as exposure comp. Do correct me If I am wrong.

Don't do that! NASA lost already 2 and the guys in the shuttle would like to keep control.

btw, how to read from light meter? :dunno:

In Manual mode: if the pointer / needle is on '0' the camera reads correct exposure with the selected metering mode. Keep the metering mode in mind, read up more in your manual. If the pointer goes off to left or right that means that the exposure will be over or under - again: based on the selected metering mode.
Try for yourself: Mount the cam on a tripod, select a subject with patches of varying brightness. Adjust the cam in Manual mode to show '0' for exposure, then change the metering mode. Watch the result on the exposure meter.

Try to use Manual when you have time on the shot, or it is particularly interesting that you want to create an effect.

how to know when to use....

when you know what you will get if you use the other modes. So go out and shoot more in all the modes.

u also shoot in manual mode when there is a "large amount of white" in your framing.
E.g. shooting white tigers at the zoo or a group of bridesmaid wearing white

if shooting white tigers, where shld i take the meter reading? the backgroup. the tigers or some mid-tone objects? tks

Also, it's better to shoot in manual mode if the lighting condition is consistent, example in an indoor place with well-distributed light or outdoor daylight without much moving clouds.

Or as ortega said, indoor with flash.

so if the lighting condition is NOT consistent, izzit better to use other mode(Av, Tv)? i tried to shoot manual mode tday, both indoor and outdoor, no problem in indoor. but when shooting outdoor, my light meter always change when i changing my standing position. thanks!
