good one on how to take child or baby pictures..by pinholecam

Just a decent Hoya or Kenko can already.Try SLRR or mass sales:)

Cleonbus, so i jus get a normal one? Roughly how much....
Is there any size thingy or all are same?

Yup Hoya or Kenko is good enough. But do take note, those cheap filter when taking at night, it's best to remove them, if not you will get flaring (or there is direct light towards to your lens with filter on).Not too sure those expensive one would have flaring as i don't own one, too expensive for me to pay for it.
Actually if you are using the Kit lens, getting a Hood first much better?

Hey ranchy, thanks for the advise :)
Hood is for taking pics in bright sunny daylight?

Is it advisable for me a noobie to use Manual Mode?
I also also a noobie, but learning with manual mode, there's always a Green button to help you out, Try it then take the pictures, if you feel, its too bright or dark, you can adjust the setting yourself loh. Digital format, you can always delete it.
If not, Tv, Av, Sv are also good to use. Adjust one setting, let the camera decide for you loh. There is no one best way of using but many way of using. Most important, Which one you feel comfortable with, you go with it.
However, you can always use the picture and scene modes on the k-x dials, it is useful when you are lazy to set up or in a rush. Just my opinion....

I actually accidentally pressed the green button next to the shutter button
and i took a pic with it, was quite amazed cos outcome is clear and sharp :D
So this button is actually to reset the settings automatically to suit the ambience?

I presume you are using the K-x.

For AV mode, the dial controls the shutter speed while the +/- button controls the Aperture (Press the button snd turn the dial to change the aperture)

I do not use the other modes besides AV and M so I cannot tell you how Tv/Sv works

Hi felix, yup i have figured it out already....
Currently using M mode, and i also like the Sv mode

Hi Bro Elstonng, sorry hijack ur thread to..........
declare myself as a newbie pentaxian as well. :D

Just brought my 1st camera. YES, FIRST camera(be it compact or SLR) for me.

it's a black KX. Brought from Manly.
As i am a very newbie, I only got myself the single lens one 18-55
Now trying my best to learn all the term.
my wife say i study the menu harder then studying for my Exam. haha

what drove me to buy the KX?
I have been a silent reader in this forum for the past 1 month deciding which model to buy. the warm and friendliness of pentaxian here plus the good review make me decide to purchase the KX.

So hopefully senior and expert here can guide newbie like me along the way.

I was trying to take my newborn earlier and cant even took afew clear shots.
guess i got alot alot to learn!!

Hi one952, its ok no probs...we can share discussions here.
Btw im GAL, not Bro...LOL
Yes this is my 1st Dslr as well....
Jus bought it for 3days, and mainly for taking pics of my 2kiddos
For my 3days experience, actually i would advise not to use auto focus at all.
Cos its a DSLR meant for u to explore, not depending on auto mode.
Its really a huge knowledge...but i think u will definitely be amazed when u tried something
other than auto mode, which the outcome will be really nice and clear sharp pics.
Try to figure it out slowly........i believe everyone here will be nice and
help u & me out ;p

Kit lens is 52mm diameter.Memories Link in mass sales sells for around $10-$15...

er.... auto focus means auto focus..
getting dslr means u get to play with all the manual settings like aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, higher range of sensitivities etc..

for shooting active kids.. auto focus is pretty crucial...

Hey ranchy, thanks for the advise. Hood is for taking pics in bright sunny daylight?
Erm Hood is not only for Bright Sunny daylight. It also add as a protection to your lens and also block stray lights to your lens. There are comments that hood also help improve IQ (Image Quality). See here, http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=705205 , alot of info on lens hood.

Yup. It will meter for you base on the ambience. However do take note, that it won't always be the best, depends on the metering pattern also, centre-weighted, spot or mutli-segment.

yea, i was using a prosumer with hood, i feel that the difference is quite obvious btw with and w/o hood.. especially under bright sunlight..

I always reccomend hood and don't use filter...

I have a filter for my smc k50mm f1.4 but i never use it (can see flares...) but still no hood for it yet :sweatsm:

Hmm...wat kind of hood should i get....cos i know there are quite a few....
Any idea how to take night pics....?
Especially taking pics of kids or moving objects....?
Quite blur still......

When taking night Pictures kids or moving objects, you need a higher shutter speed, What's your shutter speed?
And also, did your subject move out of the focus point? Sometime, taking a moving subjects at night is a challenge, auto focus tend to be slower as it search for points to focus, and when the objects is moving, for example, moving towards you, there will be change in focus point, the distance is changing which would cause some slight blurness. Hope this helps.

only 2 type as far as i'm concerned... screw-on or bayonet-mount.

screw-on will fit in the filter thread. for that type, just buy according to filter thread diameter. 18-55 and 50-200 is 52mm, 55-300 is 58mm, another common one used by FA / DA lenses is 49mm. check first, then buy.

for the bayonet-mount type, its either the original branded pentax hoods, or 3rd party ones that are made to similar specs that fits onto the bayonet mount of the lens. as far as i know, i've only managed to find the one that fits the 18-55 and 50-200. the rest are harder to find.

i recommend the bayonet mount type... easier to put on / remove than screw on hoods.

don't waste money on rubber hoods. its useless.

Any idea how to take night pics....?

what type of night pix? scenery? portraits? each type got its own technique.

the most basic is to use the pop-up flash :bsmilie:

other alternatives is to shoot with a wider aperture (smaller F number) and / or higher ISO.

Especially taking pics of kids or moving objects....?

low light + moving object is a very challenging scenario. i would suggest to take pictures in better lighting instead.
