Newbie need help with Sony/Canon decision

I guess for different usage people will have different expectations. Likewise, I can see that you are happy with the SLTs and NEX because it suits your needs.

 I agree over this point on expectation gaps.

I don't own slt la but quite intrigue by it so far. As for the nex I have my grouses about it la but I see it as what it is , and you are right it suit my needs heh so no complains :)

A lot of people use the "share/trade lens" excuse. But in reality, very few people will be willing to lend out their precious lens investments.

yup very true, but he mentioned that he used his friend camera before so i assume it's not a problem to share and trade with his friend. he should know better the answer for this.

If on budget alone, if I'd to choose - A33 kit - $1099 SRP, 550D kit $1299 SRP, then it's a no brainer which I would choose. End of the day, money talks, IMHO.

If you think long term in adopting a particular system, it's the moola $$$ that counts ultimately, period.

Doesn't matter if a particular brand have a thousand lenses to choose from, sounds like a marketing thing to me. Do you need a 600mm F4.5?

Is your $$$$ worth the buy? The Sony system you see now was based on Konica Minolta technology. Sony improvise and reinvent it further. And still evolving, that's why Sony keep on churning newer bodies with newer features every quarter this year, more to come.

That's what we in the alpha users family are seeing. Like to see C, N and the rest keeping up.

I'm the original thread starter. Disappointed to see so few replies specifically directed to my
queries.

Instead, I see so many replies going off in their different directions. In examinations, you'll
probably say these are off-topic answers. A for contents; F for relevance.

For those who responded helpfully and those following my saga, here's what has happened.

Took the Sony plunge and bought the A33 6 hrs ago. Cannot wait for A55 due to time constraints.
Bought the following as well:

1. 50mm/1.4 lens
2. 20mm/2.4 lens
3. Cable release
4. Lens filters
5. Class 10 16GB SD card
6. Extra battery

Here's my initial impression as a SLR newbie after playing a couple of hours.

1. Like the screen menu and buttons. Easy to navigate and understand.
2. Love the live LCD screen. No more peeping through view finder
3. Connect fine with Macbook. Had to read manual to understand RAW photos and AVCHD
video import procedure

1. Battery drain really fast. Spare battery essential.
2. Trouble understanding DRO/HDR difference
3. Trouble understanding creative style and auto+ mode
4. Only single delayed time release. No multiple time release
5. Read fantastic review of 50mm/1.4 lens. Does not seem to be able to achieve the same
colour/contrast/vividness as described in reviews

Will start hitting Pinnacle and Marina in the next few days to understand the camera better.
If there is interest from wannabee A33/A55 buyers, I may post further impressions in this
thread.

Anyone who can advise why my portraits are not popping up vividly with a 50mm/1.4 lens
will be greatly appreciated.

For others who are still in the fight about Brand X being better than Brand Y, I can only say
that the best sword given to a non swordsman will not necessarily make him better than a
skilled swordsman given a pair of chopsticks.

Sorry, dude ! ...I'm one of those guilty as charged :embrass:
Congrates on your decision and hope you'll enjoy the Alpha shooting experiences.

2. Trouble understanding DRO/HDR difference
3. Trouble understanding creative style and auto+ mode

DRO (Dynamic Range Optimiser) basically works on a single frame (Shot) and extend the DR by brightening the shadows and darkening the highlights. (For general purpose)
HDR (High Dynamic Range) on the other hand works by merging 2/3 bracketed frames together for the best of shadow and highlight details. (Only for special purpose)

Usually, you select the Creative style you want to use (ie: you know what you are shooting) vs letting the camera detect and select the style for you in Auto+ mode.

4. Only single delayed time release. No multiple time release
5. Read fantastic review of 50mm/1.4 lens. Does not seem to be able to achieve the same
colour/contrast/vividness as described in reviews

Not sure what you mean by "time release" ...but if you mean the 10s self timer, there is a 2s self timer by pressing the left direction instead of the right direction for the 10s timer. (or is that the other way around ?)

How are you shooting your portraits ? ...indoor lighting ? flash ? ...for an example of those "Wah Lao Eehh!" portraitures you've been reading about, you'll need good lighting !!!

Cheers ! ....hope I've redeemed myself ! :bsmilie:

Hi do not be disappointed :),

Perhaps now you know why there are seldom threads that tat starts with brand x or brand y type as that would normally invoke quite a bit of emotions amongst people heh,

I supposed you mean ur portraits shot don't stand out meaning your background blur isn't strong enough for the main subject to pop ? Using the 50mm 1.4 or even the 85 mm 1.4 don't garantee popping portraitures .

Would need more infor or you can post some pictures here for the bros to help understand the issue Better :)

play with the colorspace controls..

vivid mode etc etc up and down the selections to ur taste

Hi Fz,

Congrats on your new camera. Your images may not be especially vivid straight out from the camera due to a variety of reasons.

1. As some have pointed out, you may need to tweak your jpeg processing defaults into an output that you like

2. Metering - Most SLRs will be a bit more conservative regarding exposures and slightly underexpose the image. This can also happen when you shoot in Matrix metering mode (or also called evaluative metering) where the camera does an 'overall average' of the scene. In some situations you may need to either use the spot meter mode on your camera, or adjust the image using a photo editing software.

If you requite photoediting software, you can use Picasa (free) or if you are on a Mac you can use iPhoto. If you are really into the hobby, I'd suggest that you get a copy of Adobe Lightroom 3 to help you organise and edit your photos effectively.

Congrats on your purchase bro. You should have join us in the outing this morning. We have quite a few experienced photographers there to answer your questions.

You may want to post a photo of your portrait shot so that we can tell what's wrong with it.

Perhaps you could post your portraits with setting details and sample of image that you expect.

swordsmen have preference on which sword to carry and wield too, probably not a chopsticks though :bsmilie:

A55 0.220s vs 550D 0.252s for full af.

Are we missing something here?

That is only one mode out of the many....what about continous AF and etc so a sweeping statment like that should not be made.

Simple shoot more on different setting, check out which setting soot u more and adapt to the setting.More dynamic and color need some time to tame your camera before could achieved the desire soft spot .;)
