Newbie learning to take food photos

i find your photo lack of something. maybe u can try to ask how to improve your photo.

I think the missing part is what bro asthio88 said about my photo lacking of the colour. Will try to play on the vibrance & saturation

You're making me real hungry and i'm 2 hours more to dinner... ARGH!!!

haha.. anyway on the side note, yes i think the lighting can be improve... not an expert in food photography here, but just my humble opinion...

Thanks :) Will improve my lighting

i quite like the photo.

Looking great, ntheni  Love your home-cooked mee goreng , one of my favorite dish.

I do understand over-saturating will make the photos kinda 'fake' and that's why you must know when (or where) to stop. I like the main subjects of my photos have that kinda 'punch' and stand out from the rest (be it the color, contrast or sharpness).

The problem with using saturation slider is it adjusts all the pixels in the image, both those lacking and already highly saturated thus making the image 'weird'. Of course you can mask out (or reduce the opacity) of the affected (over-saturated) areas. If you are using CS5, you can use the vibrance slider (adjusts only area lacking in saturation) instead. Even thn, I still mask out (especially the background and non-main subject). You can also check on the clarity slider (affects the contrast in midtones). :)

Ya I slide lower look plain slide too much look fake haha
I using CS5, now I shall look into this saturation thing and the masking you talking about but everything look so "chin"...
Going to check out the net for more info. Thanks for the comment!! :)

Ntheni and Asthio88, Selective Saturation/De-Saturation can be done as follows :

first, Create a new layer with Hue/Saturation, then :

scaled.php

1) Select the color that you want to edit. It doesn't matter if the color is not displayed in the pull down menu, the PS will select for you.
2) Use the eye dropper to click on the color that you want to edit.
3) These two horizontal color bars will display with a default color range, drag to make this range as narrower as possible; the default range is
too wide that it may include the pink and orange color.
4) Now you can Sat/De-Sat the selected color, make sure any color in the closer color range are not affected, use -ve eye dropper to remove it they do.

I have used this approach to slightly De-Sat the chicken wings.

sometimes u can play with the angle. if possible try not to cut the photo.

I actually find the before photo nicer and more appealing. But it is just me. May not be natural..but looks good..=)..thks for showing how to de-sat anyway!..=)

Hi kutten, thanks for sharing. I don't use the Hue/Saturation layer much, I prefer the Vibrance and Color Balance.

Maybe it's just me, I do like my subjects a tad over-exposed + extra vibrance which sometimes may result in (very) slight color cast. I usually leave it w/o correction as I find (more often thn not) it makes the food more attractive. Personally, I prefer the before image too ;p

Have a nice weekend :)
