Newbie into Dslr

yes i knew. i didn't say one need a FF, but FF's better hi iso is better for low light photography.

ermm u dun really depend on better high iso for lowlight.

u just need a lens that have the aperture to allow you to take lowlight condition and with the use of an external flash.

iso is more for those ppl who dun have an external flash like myself so i got to bump up iso in this case.

if u are a keen night shot / low light photographer, then you should invest on an external flash and lens (f1.4 or f1.8). :)

I think 18-55 + 50mm is a good start. Eventually if TS falls in love with Prime lens, or plans for FF in the long run, he can easily pick up L lens and not lose much on his 18-55.

Personally I have nuttin against 3rd party lens, I've owned sigma lens b4 and they work great at a lower cost compared to Canon ones.. but as one bro mentioned b4, its better to visit one service centre to get things sorted out rather than visiting multiple places.

Moreover, when i recently serviced a lens at CSC (Canon Service Centre), i checked in the body for inspection too and Canon did a marvelous job of cleaning up the body w/o charge even though the issue was with the lens. Doubt you get that service at Tamron or Sigma.

18-55 is a bundled lens so its definitely value for money. That being said, TS should go get some hands on and find out if he feels the 18-55 is suitable to his needs.

::Good Luck::

i'm a newbie too and i got a 550D body + tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens. i saw some photos taken with the tamron and was pretty taken with it, so decided to just get the lens now, instead of upgrading in the future.

basically, maths broken down like this:

body - $1249
tamron lens - $630 (at MS colour with free filter)
total - $1879

alternatively, you can get kit 1 (18-55mm lens) for $1400+. bearing in mind you pay about additional $200 for the lens. currently most 18-55 lens are selling for $90-100+ in BnS, so if you decide to sell the 18-55mm lens and upgrade in the future, you lose $100+. (or you can just buy the 18-55 lens off BnS?)

i'm pretty happy with my lens & no problems with it so far. didnt get 2nd hand coz i wasnt sure how to check the lens, might as well get from a shop.

50mm on a cropped body (550D) is actually 50mm x 1.6 = 80mm which will means that for landscape, you will need to move a little backwards to shoot the entire landscape u want.
"a little backwards"?

Must be capturing some scene that is really far away...

i agree with you, it's not only a lil backwards... when it comes to taking landscapes, i think for the whole scene to fit decently in the whole frame, you need to stand a few hundred M away...

actually i don't know how to use flash well... i didn't invest in a flash also...

i shoot night landscape in hi iso too... sometimes i want to freeze the boat for example... or to freeze all the people in a street at night...

i do have a 50mm f1.8... really useful in such situations...

Thanks to all for the advice.

After some thought and consideration, I have decided to take that kit lens (18-55) for a start. If within my budget, I might get the 50mm f1.8 and a 270Ex flash.

I believe even with kit lens, the photos of my kids should come out much better compared with those taken with the PnS. :)

Looking forward to starting my Dslr learning jorney....

Thanks again!

My advice is get the best...if budget is the problem, save for while more...no point buying and then selling it away later at a lost. I have learned my lesson the hard way....but now every lens that I buy stays with me for a long time (Cos there are no better lens to upgrade to:bsmilie:).

your maths very good, and make sense....buy & sell also depend on luck, i once met a seller, he even teach me how to check a lens....dont worry to try....

to share some of my experience. i am a newbie too... before i buy my first camera (the only cameras i have prior to having a dslr is phone camera)... i did some much research, ask so much questions...

at that time my only intention is to shoot nightscenary and nothing else...

one fren told me i need tripod, cos i will have to use long exposure... and he said any dslr can do the job, no need for hi iso.

then one fren told me i need hi iso..

another told me i need fast lens...

now i realise , for me, i need all 3... which means a full frame is in fact better, bcos its hi iso performace is better (actually nikon ff performs the best in hi iso)...

in short, it is hard to know what u will need before u try it out. that's my experience.. it may not be yours...

so i feel it is good try with a low cost camera and simple lens.. and as u go, u will know what u need...

now i am shooting more than just nightscenary... so the point i am driving is, once u got the tool, u might use it more than u can imagine in the first place...

that's my experience... it may not be true for others... hope this helps, if not, just discard it.

:)

So true so true........saving money for 5D Mk III....hahahahaaha

do set aside some budget for a dry cabinet. a small one will set your back at $118. :)

Well i think the best thing would be you to play around with your kits lens and your new toy the 50mm f1.8 first and see what are your needs, then you would be able to make a better decision upgrading lenses
