Hi all,
I originally wanted to buy a super zoom prosumer digital camera like Sony DSC-H5 or Kodak Z710 to replace my aging Sony DSC-F707. After surfing the Internet, I realized that DSLR like Nikon D40 only cost fractionally more. Hence, I turned my attention to DSLR.
Top on my list were Nikon D40, Canon 400D, Olyumpus E500 and Pentax K10D. I liked Nikon D40 for its price, only $880 with kit lens but the lack of autofocus motor in the body was a let down. Canon 400D was also cheap, $1350 with kit lens. Didn't like its workmanship and lack of LCD panel. Olyumpus E500 comes with 2 zoom lens, very attractive. However, its slow start-up of more than 1.5 seconds is like cold water to my head. Bought Pentax because its feature packed. I owned a Pentax Super A about 21 years ago. Had good impression about its image quality and ease of use.
As for camera price, I checked ClubSNAP under Pentax Pricelist thread to determine its cheapest price. Cathey at Peninsula Plaza was closed on Sunday and Pentax K10D was out of stock in Alan Photo at Funan Centre. So I went to Sim Lim Square to try my luck. I tried to bargain for $1320 at every shop I entered. Only Digital Palace at #02-77 was able to give me a better bargain, $1280 for K10D + DA18-55 kit lens + Tarmax bag + Kingston 1GB SD Card. Felt it was a good buy - or is it ??
