But looking at the design of the new 70-300mm, I fear that it will of the same build quality as the new E-510 kit lens. This would probably mean that it will not be the metal mount for the lens, rather a plastic one like the new ED 14-42mm. I would prefer the metal mount.;p

Hmm if this is a good lens it'd be a godsend for those who hit birds. Well...good is relative, but I'm basing the standard of performance on the old 40-150mm. I mean we gota consider the price range, too...

To a noob like me, being able to get a Zuiko 300 mm lens at that size and price is amazing!!!! I mean, the 300 mm premium lens costs US$10,000 right??? So this is a freakin steal man. For $600, it is a very very good deal. I do 50mm f 2.0, and I also have the 14-42 mm new kit lens. I dun think the new kit lens system are any shabby at all. Me would be very interested to get this new lens.

i know its a thread about the 70-300.... care to share wif me how/what you shoot with the 50mm f2??.. i have one but found the focal length abit neither here nor there...

dammit! .. i want one of those ... 70-300 will convert to 140-600 ... damn sweet .... gonna make birding alot easier, ... considering i've been struggling trying to bird with a 40-150 ... T.T ..

@ $600 bucks, i think it's a steal ...

Ha ha ha,I understand what you mean by making birding a lot easier, was taunted by some bird that i haven't been able to ID at macritchi a couple of weeks back, armed with 40-150,not long enough, cause they're small birds, darn those birds, bird brains aren't dumb at all :bsmilie:

If it's sharp near wide-open, then it's far better than a 50-200 + a TC-14 teleconverter. Saw some examples of 50-200's using that teleconverter and images were soft unless stepped down considerably (to f/8 or so).

Sorry for the OT, but I have used it to shoot objects, cars, and people as portrait mode. I personally like it very much.

I too was wonderning how the 50-200 + TC14 would compare to the 70-300. Do you recall where you say the photos you mentioned?

since its a 100mm equiv lens...you can use it to do lots of things like close up portraits, full body portraits, short telephoto, abstracts and add the ex-25 for macro. if you can't find a good use for it, put up in B&S lor...i'm sure alot of ppl will grab it :bsmilie:

let's not OT anymore ya? maybe you can try the 4/3 lens review thread and put up a request for review on the 50mm f/2 ED?

Just got a e510. yet to master it. Is it necessary to get 70-300mm? cos going to japan 3rd week of oct.:dunno:

I don't know about others but when I'm on holiday overseas, 99% of my shots were taken with wide-angle zoom and standard zoom lenses as I'm mainly taking landscape shots most of the time. :dunno:

since you're not sure, you probably won't need it.

work with what you have to learn the workings of the camera first, don't let additional lenses that you don't need now to distract you.

but since you are going there, maybe you can tompang others who want the 70-300mm to buy :bsmilie:

It really depends on what you are shooting. If you are into landscapes, 7~14, 11~22, 14~54, 14~42 and 18~180 are all good for such purpose.

Zooms are more for a specific purpose...birding, cars bikes (fast moving objects where you need panning and stuff like that) and really nice creative shots.

But if you are new to photography, then it would be better to know your equipment first, make the most of the supplied stuff. Then later get the other stuff that you need to enhance your photography. It's a never ending process of spending money. So have fun shooting.

Just tot that if it is essential to get one, must well get it from Japan to save some $ since I'm going this Oct. Thanks guys for your advice. May not really need it at all...:D
