Hey guys,

Just shot a new video for my school, ACSI for the student council. I'm in JC1(year 5), and have been making videos for awhile. I'm pretty happy with this video on the whole, actually, with the exception of some micro details. Anyway, check it out, and i hope ya'll enjoy. It was all shot clean on a DVX102b, with minimal cc added in post....Man i love that camera. This video made me fall in love with my camera all over again.

Hi Malcom. Great job, man, keep it up!

I thought it has some good ideas in it, but would have preferred to hear the dialogue rather than read it. It was more like a silent movie which can be difficult to pull off. Also if you don't have clearance for all that copyright music you won't be able to show your movie around so much. (If you do have clearance, do you mind sharing with us how much it cost? Or do you get special academic dispensation?)

I don't have clearance for the music, but it's just an internal school video...However I've read that depending on the song, buying rights to the music can cost several thousand dollars, with premium hits costing upwards of 10,000 USD. We went with subtitles because I only had an on camera mic which was pretty lousy, and the audio normally screws up, thus going with subtitles is much safer.

Yoh Malcolm..

Kewl bro...showed your video school project to my father and he was kind of impressed it being a school project and all. However he kind of commented you kind of overdid certain parts like the running bit etc..... Anyway, i thought it was still kewl bro.. But music wise he fully advise you to be weary school or no school project.. As a matter of fact he agrees with JAEGERSING...you better off with dialogue in the case then infringing music copyrights. anyway hope you take it as positive comment.

Hey Malcolm! Great video - I had the privilege of being among the first to watch it and I must say it's great! Felt the ending was anti-climatic but you already know my greviances.

Anyhow, I think it is perfectly normal to use copyrighted music in this instance as it is intended for internal rather than mass circulation. Considering I was the architect of LAST YEARS (Click Link) in which I used some very very very recognizable tracks, I can safely testify that nothing bad will happen. I happen to also live in the United Stats, where copyrights are taken very seriously nowadays yet TONS of people flaunt the rules and are NEVER punished - Just look at other myspace/youtube videos.

Of course I totally agree it would be better to use your own or royalty free music, but its not a huge boo-boo if you don't. I have past experience making videos for ACSI for the past 3 years, all of which had copyright stuff, and I'm still relatively intact (I hope).

No, the ISD will not raid your house at night to make a scapegoat out of you. =P

It may be true that up to now the copyright issues had not caught up with you. But don't forget one day when you become rich and famous (which is what everyone of us would what to be), the used of the copyright music without clearance or release will come back to haunt you. By that time it will justify their effort to take action and claim $$$$ compensation. Do you want this to happen to you? Is it worth the risk? You decide.

Why spent so much effort to do a video that you would want to be proud of and yet still take this risk. The extra mile in using the royalty free music will add more value to your art, don't you agreed?

Many royalty free or creative common music that are available free or are affordable in the web for your production.

I wishes you well in your passion. It is great to have people who are passionate in their craft.

Ok cumon guys, I don't know what the fuss is about making the "Dont use copyright music" point so strong.

I think you guys made your point and should now look through the "copyrighted music" and appreicate the effort and talent put into this artisitic clip malcolm has film and cut together.

Trust me, I'm sure as fellow singaporeans we can do more than just talking abt copyright music right? lacking in the creativity and appreication department?

Anyways, if you guys watched the clip, theres some really good shots - acutally most of the shots were framed, focused and shot pretty decently (Some of the dutch shots were ok only)

The cutting was pretty decent honestly, it went well with the music and talking abt the copyrighted music - i thought the music was very carefully chosen, and it help to set the mood.

Acouple of things you could get for xmas would be a nice boom mic system

Cheers
David

Hobbes000,

You seem to be barking up the wrong tree about the "FUSS on COPYRIGHTED MUSIC"
I think obviously everyone has positively commented and complimented MALCOLM for his
creative work including I, so there is no question about that.

The comments here were merely as an advice to be careful on the use of COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL and i believe strongly with good intentions. Just like the great effort you put in all your works, I am sure nobody saw pass that.

Perhaps, it may sound not to nice but the obvious reality is that infringements on copyright is like swimming in the ocean long enough and if nothing happens...ALL IS GREAT! But one fine day it you may find youself stung by a JELLYFISH. I just hope it's not a deadly one....;)

GoneforGood:)

I agree its better to be safe than sorry and if copyright music is within reach, that's fine by all means. But this is for a SCHOOL production that has limited circulation and is not even seen at film festivals, theaters, or other typical distribution mediums.

C'mon guys - Lighten up. I can almost gaurantee you that no one will be caught (In Singapore of all places!) for copyright infringement for a class project. You guys should just pop into Myspace/Youtube/any video hosting site and check out how many copyright violations there are. Millions upon millions. It's not even a question of swimming in an ocean and getting caught - The proliferation of copyright music is so widespread its nearly impossible to curb.

The probability of you getting caught is about the same probability as a hammerhead shark jumping on land, picking up an AK47, and going on drive-by shootings in Sabah against enlightened village elders armed only with pitchforks. Or you could liken it to the same probability as you getting struck by lighting twice (In one sitting); whichever analogy you prefer. I'm not saying it won't happen but the chances that it will are well beyond slim.

Actually, I used to be really paranoid about it when I was back in Singapore (It IS Singapore afterall), similar to the way you guys feel about the topic. It's really quite justified and understandable since I was really creeped out about the pirated movies I bought from JB, the movies I downloaded, and of course the copyright soundtracks I used for school projects. I've been there and done that and I knew many other filmmakers who were just as concerned as I was. Nonetheless, I must admit it is a far cry from my sentiments now.

Having been to actual Hollywood and having met the network executives that control copyrights and patents here in the US, I can honestly tell you with a safe bet that they really really really really really don't care - Especially not if it's for a small-scale school project such as this one. Like the article you mentioned (Which I did read some time ago), they like using periodic scapegoats such to scare the general public into submission. Note also that they are focusing their lawsuit more on the COMPANY that HOSTED them; not the individual violators who put up the content in question in the first place.

Ultimately, it's still better to use copyright and royalty free music - And I always make sure I do for proper productions intended for the film festival circuit. In this case however, it's really not worth it as it's just a friggin' school project which not many other people outside the walls of ACSI are going to see (Sadly enough).

So lighten up guys! Don't be so paranoid and live a bit. I'm not here to say you're wrong and I'm right because it is an inherently ambiguous issue. There's no clear cut answer and we all have our own opinions about the matter so this is my 2 cents!

Well yeah, this was only a school project intended for internal circulation. Besides, I've seen so many times on these boards where people use copyrighted music for wedding montages, or home video footage montages, etc. I doubt they bought rights to said copyrighted music...The point is that while it is technically illegal, its no different from letting your family see your vacation footage cut to the latest pop songs, or a video for your church, et cetera - In this case i just have a big family. A very big family. A congregation.

video is gone!

The music company that dares to sue a school kid for using their music tracks for a school project will look very silly indeed. Dun worry la.
