New uses for old digital - infrared fun!

I was going thru some books on digital infrared and it seems that older cams do not have effective IR shield; and this makes them ideal for IR photography. Can even handhold yr cam! Therefore, old cams like my Canon G1 can be resurrected as an effective IR cam. So I went to buy a Hoya 72 and got myself (with some difficulty looking for it) an old adapter for the G1 and here is the results:

This pix is "as-is" untouched by PS (except for cropping) taken this afternoon at 1/30 (!), f2.

Now I have an excuse to buy a new P&S and use the G1 as a dedicated IR camera. Take them old cameras off the shelf!!!

shh.. you shouldn't have done that ! This could increase the resale value of these old digicams !

But it is a open secret that the Canon G1 is a very good digicam for IR photography, along with the Nikon CoolPix 950 and the Olympus C2020. I have an old Nikon CoolPix 950 and it could also be heldheld in bright sunlight for IR photography. The LCD could be used to preview and compose the picture before shooting unlike the newer digicams and DSLRs.

Now go outside and play more with your 'new' toy...

I've a colleague who hates his Oly C2020 and wants to get a D70. Hee! Hee! I've been working on him for the past couple of months to get the D70 and sell (or better yet, give) me his old P & S. :devil:

My Minolta S304 P&S can also shoot IR. Does not need to CWB. With the R72 on the lens can view, frame and AF without any problems.

Here an image done with the S304 and R72. Autolevels, Channel Swap, Hue/Saturation adjustments done. A bit noisy though.

Hurray! I just found out that my Sony DSC-S85 can take IR too.. can't wait for my bro to return from his trip..

btw, wat is the cost for R72 filter in SGD? and where can it be found for the cheapest price in Singapore, care to share?

Sony cams with night mode works for IR, but if I'm not wrong only in BnW.

R72 depends on the filter size you need.

52mm about $39/-
67mm $80/-
77mm about $200/-

Most shops sell about the same price +,- a $2 to $3.

Thanks alot for ur quick reply... I just discovered that my Palm Zire 72 can see IR light also..

I wonder if it can achieve IR effect by putting negative infront of the len...

You need an unexposed, processed film negative to do that. Exposed negative will not work well.

Another way, is to try using the black coloured filter case to try (usually the lower half of the case). Don't work too well but at least you can tell if it can work.

Or if you want to really try out your Sony, join us in one of our outings. You can use my 52mm R72.
