That is comforting! I just bought a 18-200 too and this high-pitched noise has been literally giving me a headache. But I guess it won't bother me as much now that I know it is supposed to sound like this.
My concern is as follows. I set my lens to VR on and A/M. When I click on the shutter it focuses, takes the pic and all is fine until, after a second or 2 after releasing the shutter button, I hear a slightly audible click, which I assume is the sound of the VR engine disengaging. If the VR is off, I don't hear the sound at all.
I took the lens back to the vendor who said that the sound is normal but didn't provide an explanation what's causing it.
I too am experiencing the same issue, but when I set my D40 in auto mode with VR ON the audible click is even louder and after the shutter button is released the image in the view finder jerks. Went back to the seller and we tested another lens and camera with the same effects. Do you all experience it? Probably most of you do not use the AUTO MODE at all so you don't notice it, hehe. Anyway, can we use the VR ON in AUTO MODE?
Also first time using a VR lens. Thanks.
