new to DSLR - should I get old 300D or new 350D

Think that by the time you are done with 300D, you should hv picked up enough skills to utilise a higher end camera. Jumping to a high end one now when it will b obselete before you pick up enough skills does not sound like a good idea to me ... my 2 cents worth ... hopes it helps ...

My take:
get a 2nd hand 300D, play around with it.. With the spare $ get a 2nd hand lens, then practice, practice, practice.. Read up more camera-craft books.. Maybe enter a few competitions.. Then decide if you wanna splurge on a more expensive system.. ;)

I moved from the 10D to the 350D.

I say go for the 350D. The noise control is better esp. at higher ISO, the cable connection is USB2 which means possible to shoot RAW while tethered (the USB1.1 of the 300D generation is WAY too slow), and the buffering on the digic-II is FAST.

Hey, if I don't miss the 10D ... I can't imagine you would miss the 300D... if results are what you're after. Even though I went from a 10D to a 350D instead of 20D, to me in many ways its still an _upgrade_ , performance wise.

And frankly, I find the 300D too bulky to be considered "compact" ... esp. when you consider the 350D.

Come on, the 300D is a very nice camera in itself :) I'm also using one, can't find enough reasons or $$$ to upgrade :D

agree :)

I started this hobby in may and back then I bought my 300D used for about $900 or so. At the time I too was divided between the 350D, the 300D and going all the way to the 20D.

I decided on the 300D and only last week bought a used 20D. I’m very happy with my decision, and I think if you are starting out, the 300D is no slouch. My 300D is installed with the hacked firmware, so it has almost everything the 10D has except the better focusing modes.

I brought my camera with me on an overseas work trip, and I have to say it really did not matter that the 300D was slower and older. I did mostly landscapes and some people photography. Landscapes are not going to run from you, and most people who pose for portraits will gladly wait for you to take their picture. I only felt the 300D’s limitations with the 4 shot buffer and 2.5fps when I came home and started taking lots of pictures of my daughter. Children run around and are very unpredictable.

Even then, one could argue that you do not need a machine gun to get good shots. I have to agree that with some time, you can get very well timed shots, but at other times, you just want to capture a few shots in quick succession to later pick the shot with the best nuances of expression..

From my own meandering experience, I would say go with a 300D. I got it and then later bought the 20D. It was a worthwhile upgrade to me. If you buy the 350D, you may tire of the plastic body, yet when you do, you will look back and realize that you paid $1.6k for the 350D and the 20D has a better feel but doesn’t quite offer enough to justify an “upgrade”. You will be looking at the 5D or 1dm2 instead, which is like $5k+?

The 300D will leave you with a little spare change to pick up an excellent lens used, like the 70-200 f4L. Shoot some portraits with that lens and get a feel for what you can expect further down the road.

Whatever you decide, welcome to the horribly expensive world of DSLR photography! Lol.

Why not 10D instead of 300D? U can get a good used one ard 1.1k.

I dun know about you all. But when i buy a camera i will have the intension of using the camera all the way, as long as possible, and not just upgrade it after one or two years. But looking at some of replies here, it seems that a lot of people think otherwise.
Therefore i took quite a while before i got the 20D. I started looking when it was still D60, i was tempted but i felt it was not enough yet, then come the 10D, still i waited. When the 20D arrives, looking at the specs, i feel that this camera will be able to last me a long time, so i got it. And till now, i still feel that this camera is already good enough for me, so i am sure that i will not be tempted by the next camera that replaces the 20D for the 20D has all that i need. So i do not agree people advicing one to get a camera now, then upgrade later...

Maybe this is now the camera companies want us to think, the new one is so good, your current camera is already obsolute, get a new one!

just my thoughts.

I got you on your opinion.. I am sure many of the people who gave their reply want to use their camera for a long long time..

they are just give me some suggestions, a broad perspective which they include the possbility that I may want to do an upgrade later.. pointing out that there is this factor I have to consider..

I am sure no one is suggesting that I (nor themselves) should change a camera in a short time to come..

;)

a dslr prize deprecates very fast compared to a flim body. so as long if u r indenting to upgrade to a new molder in the future, it is batter to sell the older molder when it is still not to obsolite and worth some money for people to buy.

my 2cents: Was a D60 - 10D user. Shoot with 350D in office. Verdict? 350D sucks if you are used to bigger form factors. But my biggest grouse is the lack of all around robustness in the 350D. For an event, I put on a 15mm and set it to continuous fire, about 200plus shots, it hangs i.e. no response when depress shutter, in mid-fire. Had to remove battery to get it working again. Worst, after a few shots later, I try to compensate exposure by adding one stop, I can see the cursor scroll itself to -2 !! Again, requires a battery removal to re-start.

Methinks, it was overworked, buffer over load or whatever, its a poorly designed camera from canon. form factor sucks big time, how can one shoot without the rear thumb wheel still baffles me

Anyway, i'm just ranting cuz my office can only afford the 350D for event photog and nothing better...piece of crap, luckily still within warranty
