for a travelling purpose lens, why need focusing speed?
and what's the purpose of f/2.8 to a wide angle? best pictures for wide zoom are come from F/6 onwards......

here is the review of 18-125, if u understand chinese:

personally, i recommand Tamron 24-135mm as ur travelling purpose lens + tokina 17mm F3.5
it is not only because cheap, but Canon does not have such wide to tele range lens.

Fast focussing speed is always welcome :) The 18-50/2.8 would be used for events too and the larger aperture would come in useful for available light shots. It's range is not really adequate for a one-lens travel kit though (but guess can make do with cropping).

The Tamron lens was my fav travelling as well, until I got my DSLR. I think it is hard to find another lens comparable to the 24-135 for travelling for DSLRs which has similar range, quality and price.

Canon has two IS wide-angle-tele zoom: 17-85 IS (which works out to be ~28-135 on a 1.6x crop factor DSLR) and 28-135 IS.

Nikon has a 24-120 VR.

so how? anyone tested "live" test sigma 18-50 f2.8 with the 17-40 f4L ?

I believe the L would beat the Sigma hands down, otherwise people would be rushing for that lens now... hehe... :bsmilie:

That guy's got a bad copy of the 24-70L... :dunno:

The 18-24mm range of the 18-50 is pretty sharp and pretty free of CA even wide open at 2.8. This is nearly something like the tamron 28-75/2.8 just that you get extra coverage at the wide end. :) If you stop the sigma down to f4, it's really very good.

Of course the L will be better, but you will be very hard pressed to tell with anything smaller than S8R.

Problem is that the focusing speed is not exactly fast (that is why i am not using it). Your 50mm prime will focus faster (which is not very fast also anyway). And the lens is small and looks unsubstantial (which may or may not be a good thing).

i think the 18-50 is useful for me coz i can use it with say a 70-200 to cover most shots, so instead of getting another standard zoom, can cut down my equipment to a 2 piece combo.

I just got this lens. On the 20D, focussing is fast, almost in an instant. Haven't tried the 18-125, so can't make any comparisons with it.

To put it simply, it's small, sharp and bright. And for 20D users, you get 3x precision focussing with the high precision sensor.

Will do a mini-review when I can find some time.

thanks. have gotten the 18-125 in the end due to the more versatile range :) no regrets so far. if I need handholdable shutter speeds under low light conditions, I either use flash or up the ISO to 1600/3200.
