[UPDATED 20th Feb 2007 with recent video]

Got my DVX a few weeks ago from Expandore and took some sample shots at 25p. These samples have no particular story line or any story boarding for that matter. It's all shot ad-hoc and in natural lights.

First Outing with my AG-DVX102BEN shot with 25p (PAL) Letterboxed 4:3. The scene settings are available on the end credit of the footage. There is no particular story line (ad-hoc). Post with FCP and Magic Bullet Look Suite with my custom tweaked settings.

A late afternoon test shot at Muara Beach (Brunei Darussalam). Shots were mostly on tripod.

A recent photographers outing at one of the many desolated area in Jerudong Beach (this particular spot was quite nice as we can see the sun setting on the horizon clearly).

Hey thats not bad at all but why did you use 25 fps? The reason why people buy DVXes is for 24p. Thanks and enjoy the camera

Wanted to ask: What settings did you do for CC in the first clip? Thanks.

25P is for PAL 24P for NTSC

Quite obvious he's using MB Looksuite

24p is for film. Usually 25p video is slowed down to 24p for transfers. It's not true that 24p is for NTSC.

Dude.

NTSC is 30 fps.

24p can be used interchangably for BOTH PAL & NTSC DVX or XL2 cameras.

Yes obviously. I wanted to know which preset he used. Like Color bypass, Neo, Warmish, Curahee, No.85, etc.

From what i saw they look good, but i couldnt see the videos in their entirety due to the spotty internet. However, its great to see another DVXuser around. Too many people seem to prefer the canon XL2 (read: delusionals).

Hi all !,

Thanks for all the comments. My NLE is FCP 5 and I use Magic Bullet LookSuite to do the above CC work. I did not use any preset however, I just enable LookSuite and tweaked it and create a preset from there. My DVX scene file is basically (Detail -3, Chroma Phase +3, Cinegamma D, Cine Matrix, 25p, Thin) and I shot with 4:3 letterbox. I'll post some more test with squeeze mode as soon as I get some free time.

Please go to http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=81691 for link to my 320x240 download version of the empire day out footage (I know it's still a bit compressed but the actual footage is quite large to upload and not really convenient for downloads).

Lastly, I'm glad I decided to go with the DVX. (To all who are thinking of buying a DVX, don't walk, run and grab one today  . I'm barely scratching the surface of the capability of this camera).

Thanks and Looking forward to hear from other DVX'ers out there.

Theoritically, if it's a downloadable software from the net (you can get a downloadble version for purchase), how can I sell it to you and still be using my 'copy'?

You can just download the trial version on the their website and then PM me. ;)

hi i m looking at getting AG-DVX102BE for my sch.. mm.. is it gd? how does it perform under low light and in natural light .. how s it s colour reproduction? care to share? :D

Its a great camera. If you wanna get it, don't consider. just run to get it. It performs the best for its price, and really shines in natural lighting conditions. Among the Xl2, PD170 and the DVX, the DVX has the best low light performance without gain. When gain is turned on then it'll be surpassed by the XL and the PD. However if you care about quality then you shouldn't even touch the gain switch anyway.

As for performance under low light, it's a very good performer. I've never had to use the gain control just yet and I've shot a candle in a dark room for test and it's beautiful (of course you can't see the whole room but you get the idea).

In natural light (afternoon) I have to switch on the ND filter (which is built-in btw) to stop down the light and to enable me to get shallow DOF by opening the iris wide open. Overall, you would not have to worry lighting too much (unless of course you are going for a specific look or shooting a feature). Go to my youtube link http://youtube.com/profile?user=alijanah

There are some videos in there shot under natural light (afternoon, dusk, late afternoon, no night shoot yet). I've also experimented with studio lighting on one of the test music video I did with some fellow DVX'er in a friend's studio. I've uploaded the clip today so it might take a while for youtube to load it up on the site.

I got it online via download from their website. As far as film look is concerned, you can also try Sapphire from www.genarts.com which I think has surpassed Magic Look in the film look department. Then again, Sapphire is a more complete package in terms of post production plug-ins (has render capabilities, special effects, etc). Magic Bullet is limited to color correction and gamma correction processing.

I've used the trial version of Sapphire to do CC work and film grading for this test music video I did with another fellow DVX'ers here at a friend's studio with only basic lighting. It's a no budget production and it's only for us to test music video production setup. We plan to do more proper ones later on with a local band. The youtube version is posted below here (as usual, youtube has the worst compression out there, so it's not a true test for seeing color grading and color correction)

I used to use pd150 and 170 for my earlier shoots. i think the 5k tag includes a .7 converter, external mic all that so probably justfied its 1+k more than the dvx bah. Not forgeting its magnesium alloy body if i'm not wrong, very solid feel... and of course can shoot in dvcam mode (though i seldom use unless doing broadcast stuff). I was hesitant to swop to dvx in the first place but that was the cheapest decent cam i can afford... anf of course I did not regret it... It was very very well designed (i'm a product designer by the way ;) ) the way they designed each dial, focus ring, smooth iris all that... man just way better than pd... the only thing i missed abt pd is playing with special slowl shutter effect 1/3 wor... i think dvx 1/12 nia... other than that nothing much liao... but if you ask me now to convert back to pd.... i think i'll miss loads of dvx features...

hope this is useful... cheers!
