:) good lens.. but at 1:1, what is the actual aperture of this lens?

both the 60 and 105 reduces to F4.8, so am keen to know about this

Errr... at 1:1, why would you need f2.8?

Regards

When you go into the world of macro (or micro in Nikon-land), the lenses are engineered to focus closer than normal and optimized for that application. For discussion say you use a 50mm (with lens focused at infinity) and want to get 1:1, theory says you extend the lens out by adding extension of 50mm (=focal length of lens) to achieve that. When you extend that out by 50mm, your path of light doubled, so you will lose 2 stops of light. So a f/2.8 lens becomes f/5.6. Now if you focus to min and extend the lens to achieve 1:1, and the engineers put in a trick to shift the FOV (field of view), effectively shortening the focal length of the lens, you need less extension so the loss of light becomes less than 2 stops, hence the f/4.8 or so quoted by you. All macro or micro lens do that, it is whether the maker is honest enough to show the actual f stop or the set f stop.

Imagine if the engineers do not use optical tricks to do this, then the 105mm needs 105mm extension to get to 1:1!

2/3 stop slower than F4.8? Maybe...

This is the correct answer, if f/4.8 is correct to begin with. You loss around 1 and 2/3 stop from f/3.5.

Errr... at 1:1, why would you need f2.8?

Regards

At 1:1, I am not sure if anyone ever use f/2.8 to shot. In the 1:2 to 1:1 range I typically use between f/11 and f/22.

Despite all the arguments to support this lens, I still think this lens will face stiff competition from:

1. Nikon AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED
2. Tamron SP AF 60mm F/2 Di II LD [IF] Macro
3. Tamron SP AF 90mm F/2.8 Di Macro

I think Nikon wants to take care of the entry level DSLR users. The list price of the AF-S 60/2.8 is around $1100. It's not just a prime lens. It's an AF-S Micro! To buy back the users who are migrating to Tamron 90mm.

It is only around 0.3k more. And entry level users (from what I observe) always want to upgrade, so wont the AF-S 60 make more sense to them so they wont get stuck at DX?

haha, very interesting right... i'm too..

i hope to getting it for my D700 on FX body.. just only lose out 12mp become to 5mp so i dont care.. about that..
i just want to be more value for money and it lens can be used as portrait or close up item..

used in FX = 127mm with VR it's cool.. and also got AFS motor so i can decide to get another DX body as well.

Best check field curvature for this lens first, or else your portraits may end up looking bland.

It is a DX lens by the way.

I really don't know what Nikon is trying to do with this? :dunno: Trying to show the D40/40x/60/3000/5000 people that they still care?

haha! maybe trying to capture the budget photographers' market... for this price, there are cheaper alternatives though... does anybody here use the VR when shooting macro and your cam is mounted on a tripod? duh? :dunno:

When a lens is about $700, $350 is 50% more, that's quite a lot more. When you're ready to spend $2k, what's $350?

How would the lens become 127mm when used on FX? And what has having AF-S motor got to do with you deciding to get another DX body? :dunno::dunno:

ya, cause i feel i'm getting the pro FX bodies is abit too heavy to carry back to JB,
for every week end..

then i just decide to looking 2nd body such as D3k for my AFS 50mm f1.4G & it just launch 85mm f3.5 macro with VR is very helpfull for out of focus blur.. especially like night time and without bring flash light alone.. so i can take with VR :bsmilie:

DX bodies don't need AF-S for focusing but from what I understand you are trying to say that AF-S is needed on a DX body :dunno:

why DX bodies is should not using AF-S lens??

such as D40, 60 & D3000 and D5000.. for entry level is no built-in motor..
so just used the manual focus??

if for D50, D70, D80, D90 and D300 that pro level.
i dont said it lah.

so for my experience is main bodies can using the AF motor for DX bodies.
2nd body can be use the entry level.

i think u r rite....
i'm a t90 user....

if the barrel doesn't extend out when focusin(like the t90 f/2.8), i might jus consider this if the price is rite...

From Nikon USA website:

Internal Focus (IF)
Provides fast and quiet autofocusing without changing the length of the lens, retaining subject working distance throughout the focus range.

BBB!!! :sweatsm:

this is getting poisonous...
