New E mount Zeiss 16-70 f4 zoom

I have recently rediscovered the joys of using a zoom lens, specifically my kit 16-50 PZ. The 18-105 and 16-70 both seem quite attractive but I absolutely agree that such a big lens seems to defeat the purpose of a small Nex unless it's paired with a future DSLR-shaped e mount camera.

On a related note, I'm not too sure about paying more for a 16-70 because it's a Zeiss when you can get 18-105 G lens for less, especially since both zooms are quite huge already.

Well.. to add on, also, on the rumor site..there are news about

E-mount 85mm F1.8 and 35mm F2.8 prime from Zeiss too.

Add in the rumored movable sensor e mount camera . It will be an exciting year to see interesting products offering from Sony and convergence of e and alpha mount.

you mean for the new 16-70 F4 ? Probably need to wait for more reviews after formal launch. As for the existing AF of the Touit and CZ 24mm F1.8, need to wait for others to comments. The 24mm F1.8 is fine, nothing to complain about for me and nothing to trumpet about too.

I personally think this lens, equivalent to 24-105mm on a 35mm, will be very interesting. However, I will hold my interest till the announcement of the A7000 (FF E-mount). There is another zoom lens to be announced (dunno from Sony or Zeiss). I will go for the 24/1.8 as an interim.

3rd party AF and OSS could be a hit and miss?

the A7000 E mount is a not FF camera , according to rumours mill at least. It has a sensor that can be shifted to allow for lenses on other camera brands to work on the body. ( but the AF system is not going to ).

Third party AF can be as good as shown by sigma. The 16-70 F4 will be different from Zeiss Touit lens as they will be primarily manufactured by Sony but using Zeiss design and subjected to Zeiss QA.

Is there any photo of this lens side by side with the 18-55 kit for size comparison?

Sony should have introduced a 16-50 f2.8-4 G lens instead of the current 16-50 power zoom.

Many thanks.

Actually i was wondering why Sony isn't making an e-mount standard 3x zoom at constant f2.8? Like maybe a 17-50 f2.8? Pana and now oly have their 12-35/12-40 f2.8, I think it's high time Sony has one too (I don't think f4 is actually fast enough to be considered fast under low light situation). Or if they made the 16-70 an f2.8-4.0 would have been better.

My main concern with this lens as with most nex lenses is value. A 17-70 sigma 2.8-4 is roughly half the cost of this lens. Likewise i recently bought a sigma 10-20 a mount rather than the 10-18 e-mount as its hard for me to justify the x2 jump in price. A 1.2 to 1.5 diff maybe, but a x2?. Honestly though im still thinking about making this lens purchase because of the zeiss name.

UWA zooms are normally very expensive. M43's Pana 7-14mm & Oly 9-18mm are all in the $1,xxx territory. Even aps-c lens like Canon EF-S 10-22mm also very ex.

For me the (rumoured) price of the CZ 16-70 and G 18-105 being approx $1k and $700 is acceptable. In fact i am mildly surprised that they are cheaper than i would have expected them to charge - i believe both to be highly desirable as NEX will finally have proper zoom lens (I was expecting about 25% more). If they made a SEL1650 f2.8 around $1.5k I think it's ok as that is what the Pana and Oly equivalents cost anyway. And the equivalent aps-c first party versions by canonikon are near or even $2k.

And I would be more than happy if Sigma (or Tamron) made them for e-mount at half the price (put more pressure on the 1st party people to reduce their price). I love their recent dslr products (eg. sigma's art series).

Using a-mount lens with la ea2 adapter is something i would very very much like to avoid. Initially when i got my 5N i like attached big A mount lens to small nex body. But that novelty soon wore off. Unless i already have an existing good collection of a mount lens, i wouldn't consider the extra bulk.

Pretty simple. Size concerns. Im sure a F2.8 constant aperture zoom lens on the apsc format would be HUGE. They might make sense for the e mount video systems but it would destroy the form factor if it were to be mounted on a nex. Gotta remember Emount lenses are covering bigger apsc sensors as compared to the m4/3 systems and most emount lenses incorporates in lens stabilization.

In terms of aperture equivalence, a f2.8 m4/3 lens does behave like how other apsc/ff f2.8 lens behaves in terms of light gathering but when it comes to DOF equivalence , a F2 lens on 4/3 sensor equates to perhaps f4 on a full frame, so not that fast actually. Food for thought. IMO f4 constant zoom on an apsc is not slow, for general purpose lens it should do fine. Keeps the nex form factor too.

heres a good simple read about dof relativity on different sensors annd another discussion thread about it.

Some people have already tried out the CZ16-70 and the photos look brilliant considering they were ooc Jpeg!

Lastly for those who are interested in its size, here are picts of it mounted on the 6 and 5r
