Giving a short assessment of the NEX5 after using it for 30min. This is just my personal feel. It's NOT a review or anything concrete or substantial. Just a personal feel of the camera after holding and using it for about 30min...
I didn't even bother to test the camera prior buying it. As what I usually tell my customers, do you even need to test drive a porsche? Anyway, just picked it up from the reputable shop in Peninsular Plaza. Went back to my shop and didn't even have time to power up, took a few porn shots of it with the M lenses and Singscott came in. I warned him not o try, but he did anyway... and... he was poisoned.
Fei came in did the same thing to the camera. And I believe, he couldn't sleep tonight.
Anyway, the camera wasn't deflowered by me. I just managed to molest it for a while with 5% battery life remaining at 10:45pm after putting my boys to sleep. Thought I needed the manual. Contrary to popular belief, the manu system was pretty easy to navigate. At least I didn't have that much problem with it than the Oly EP1. Screen was so bright and nice, I think they should be using the same technology as the Apple Retina(TM)... :bsmilie:
The focus assist button was placed in such an intuitive position that made manual focusing a breeze! Live View was so easy to use. In fact it's even easier than my 5D Mk2! Not hard selling, or BS, anyone who try it with manual lenses should feel the same way as me.
Initially I have some problem finding the ISO setting, but it seems to be hidden behind one of the top level icon. After locating it, I didn't have problem with it anymore. I don't understand why people complain that the ISO setting is embedded in inconvenient location... Being a film user for close to 30 years, I don't usually change ISO unless I change film. Do we really need to change ISO that often?
Focusing wise, I really like the articulated screen. Feels like the Rolleiflex 2.8! I love waist level focusing! Even the cat didn't feel threatened!
Used the 50/f1.1 on it and it didn't feel as restrictive as the M4/3. 75mm effective focal length is just right for portraiture and short tele. Will bring the 35mm/f1.2 & 35/f1.4 for a short spin when I find time tomorrow evening....
People who know me well enough know that I usually don't fall in love with digital cameras. I'm still a film guy deep in my heart. The 5D Mk2 is a wonderful tool with Nikon lenses mounted on it. But this NEX5 is a real little hot chili padi that is so small and cute, amazing LCD screen, nice to hold and feel, easy to focus, good battery life, beautifully styled and only 1.5x CROP!
If you can be a little more "deep" overlook the weird size ratio with manual lenses mounted on it, this little chili padi is actually a joy to use....
