New digital body for M lenses...

Looking at the samples photos of the leica lenses, I realised the DOF is not so creamy like what you can get on M8 especially at wide open apertures. I thought NEX 5 sensor size is close to M8? How come all the summilux when shot wide open @1.4 become like stopped down to f2.8?

The kit lenses are really below standard. But with Leica glass. the picture seem to be very well corrected. Amazing

between the zoom and pancake lens, i heard zoom lens is a lot better than the 16mm pancake as its soft, consider get VC 15mm to replace it :p

Some of you might be wondering how it will look like...

Complete set of photos here....

Will test with the 50/f1.1 tonight...

Wah! Long time no see! Nice to see you post again... feel nausea? Need some panadol? :bsmilie:

Rifle needs to be accurate, not to look pretty.

Got the NEX and adapter this evening, didn't even have time to charge the battery. Left 5% and took it out for a short spin at 10:45pm with the 50/f1.1. Here are some pics...

Please bear in mind that all pictures were shot at ISO800, wide open on the f1.1, hand held. The cats are in a very dimly back lit condition with the street lamp behind, if you see the EXIF, it was shot at 1/10s.

Some more pictures available at my flickr

Giving a short assessment of the NEX5 after using it for 30min. This is just my personal feel. It's NOT a review or anything concrete or substantial. Just a personal feel of the camera after holding and using it for about 30min...

I didn't even bother to test the camera prior buying it. As what I usually tell my customers, do you even need to test drive a porsche? Anyway, just picked it up from the reputable shop in Peninsular Plaza. Went back to my shop and didn't even have time to power up, took a few porn shots of it with the M lenses and Singscott came in. I warned him not o try, but he did anyway... and... he was poisoned.

Fei came in did the same thing to the camera. And I believe, he couldn't sleep tonight.

Anyway, the camera wasn't deflowered by me. I just managed to molest it for a while with 5% battery life remaining at 10:45pm after putting my boys to sleep. Thought I needed the manual. Contrary to popular belief, the manu system was pretty easy to navigate. At least I didn't have that much problem with it than the Oly EP1. Screen was so bright and nice, I think they should be using the same technology as the Apple Retina(TM)... :bsmilie:

The focus assist button was placed in such an intuitive position that made manual focusing a breeze! Live View was so easy to use. In fact it's even easier than my 5D Mk2! Not hard selling, or BS, anyone who try it with manual lenses should feel the same way as me.

Initially I have some problem finding the ISO setting, but it seems to be hidden behind one of the top level icon. After locating it, I didn't have problem with it anymore. I don't understand why people complain that the ISO setting is embedded in inconvenient location... Being a film user for close to 30 years, I don't usually change ISO unless I change film. Do we really need to change ISO that often?

Focusing wise, I really like the articulated screen. Feels like the Rolleiflex 2.8! I love waist level focusing! Even the cat didn't feel threatened!

Used the 50/f1.1 on it and it didn't feel as restrictive as the M4/3. 75mm effective focal length is just right for portraiture and short tele. Will bring the 35mm/f1.2 & 35/f1.4 for a short spin when I find time tomorrow evening....

People who know me well enough know that I usually don't fall in love with digital cameras. I'm still a film guy deep in my heart. The 5D Mk2 is a wonderful tool with Nikon lenses mounted on it. But this NEX5 is a real little hot chili padi that is so small and cute, amazing LCD screen, nice to hold and feel, easy to focus, good battery life, beautifully styled and only 1.5x CROP!

If you can be a little more "deep" overlook the weird size ratio with manual lenses mounted on it, this little chili padi is actually a joy to use....

As you mentioned... Here I am up in the middle of the night looking at your sexy camera porn OVER and Over again.........

No need to see... just get the camera. It works very well with ALL your existing M lenses...

Imagine... 1.5x crop vs 2x and half the price of the RD1 and double the megapixel!

And at ISO800, images are still usable. Try that with the M4/3... :bsmilie:

:( But there's no nice wide angle lens like the Pany 7-14 mm on the Sony NEX-5 yet. :(

With the CV 12mm it becomes 18mm on the NEX. Still usable for interior and wide angle. :)

nicely done Chiif!
:)
let the poison begin

It's so discrete. No one will know that we are taking pictures with this little harmless chili padi...

Thanks BennyB... this round, the poison will be even deeper than the M4/3.

Somehow Sony has made a camera for the manual focusing photographers.
