Need tripod recommendation from pro

Ah Im using a canon 40d, currently my biggest lens is the 10-22 and 28-75, so its nothing too large to handle.
Anyway what i am looking for is a sturdy tripod that is LIGHTWEIGHT and is easy to manouevre around. I dont want those 3rd party ones ( gave up after 2 failed tripods)
One more thing is I need it to be firm on top so the shake can be reduced.
I look to spend $100-200 or is that too little to handle?

I would suggest Manfrotto, but they are not VERY light and not exactly cheap either. Get at least a 190 coupled with a good head, say a 486 or 488. That would come up to about 280 - 300 or so, but, it's a good stable set.

I am no pro but I will say don't skimp on the tripod and ball head as, if well chosen, they can last you a long time. Continually upgrading to a slightly better setup will only cost you more in the long run. Get the best you can afford now and worry about them many years later.

I am currently using a Manfrotto 190PROB + Giottos MH1001-652 setup which I have gotten at a great price off the BnS section but after a few tries, I found the ball head lacking... Now I am looking at the Markins M10/M20 for the next purchase.

Wat about Slik? Prices quite okay... Maybe 400DX is enough for your set up nw and in the near future... And it comes with a pan head too... no need to spent $$ for a head.

Well... I've seen them give away very poor quality tripods with a nice big Canon sticker on the legs :bsmilie::bsmilie:

So I guess depends on what you define as 3rd party.

No worries for many many years... even with big/heavy lens purchases.

If you're looking for a cheap(er) solution... based on your setup, anyof the Slik Pro DX series should handle the weight just fine. It comes with a pan head too...

just bought my manfrotto + ball head + bag for $310...

tripod is very sturdy and built quality is unquestionable...
weight wise... its abou 2.x kg with ball head

I'm no expert, but I think to be sturdy the tripod can't be too lightweighted, even for the superlight superexpensive carbon fiber ones. So you will just have to choose one that is good for your needs, either comprise the sturdiness or the convenience carrrying around without hurting your back. I bought a Manfroto 725B a while ago for ~160 or 180, come with quick release and a carrying bag. It is not super sturdy, but can support up to 7 lbs.

Your budget is good enough for manfrotto 190 or 055 depend on your height.

Usually CF tripod will range from $500 and above w/o ballhead.

Good enough just for the tripod legs alone. You still need to factor in the head?

shjfun: you're right. that's why the CF tripods come with a hook below the center column, for you to hang something heavy (e.g. your bag) so that you can achieve the stabliity that is required.

light and portable? i would suggest a slik 340dx. tripod + default head is as light as manfrotto 190prob without any head. :angel:
they not as steady as the 190 or as much function but definitely more than stable enough for dSLR + tele lenses up to 70-200 f2.8.

best of all they just cost slightly over a hundred

Ok Slik Pro DX.. I like the slik tripods.. Ive handled a Slik and a manfrotto before. but those were for medium format so they were SOO HEAVY. Best is to try it out at the store itself, so Mass Sales are out for me, since i dont know the exact model for my set up. Any other recommendations? Light light no need for those Huge telephoto lenses.. long way more for me.

The SLIK's are around your price and weight range. If you do mostly landscape, plan to get a shorter one (1.4~1.5m) which are lighter.

Recommend to buy a tripod/head for long term as it costs too much to upgrade or end up with many unused tripods in your collection. Try the new lightweight folding traveller carbon fibre tripod by Benro with a matching head. Costs around $500+ but will be a one time purchase. OP has good prices on them.
