Need Some Advice To Get The 70-300 VR on To Get TC 1.4 For My 70-200 f2.8?

My take is, since you are using a Pro-lens, why waste it??
Make full use of it from the huge amount you paid for it.
Add a TC which costs a fifth of the lens price and Walah :o
It becomes 340mm.

I would do that if I have 1. and sell away 70-300 ;)

Hello TS, i would save the money by not getting both. Seriously, the 70-200 F2.8 is so sharp that even you crop the picture to match the 300mm reach, your picture would be still sharp or even sharper than the 70-300mm VR or the 70-200 F2.8 + 1.4TC. The 80mm reach is very insignificant here.

iirc, the TC comes with a paper, and the paper says 105mm can use...

1.7 is the only TC i will go for 70-200 and i think its way better then 1.4. 2.0 makes the af slow and IQ drop significantly. I also agree with Reno .. especially when 70-200 is a fast and sharp lens, 1.4x actually dun make much different in that range of zoom. crop it and you are still able to cover the 200 to 280 range easily.

1.7 will be just nice and you can hit 340 with decent IQ still, i use a D300 so i think with the 1.5x crop factor, i will hit even further ... its already a pro spec len you got there and should work around it. your TC can be used on other nikkor lens too so thats a plus pt.

70-300 is the len for people that dun need or cant affort 70-200 ... since you have 70-200 already, why bother thinking of a 70-300.

Gonna get the 70-200 soon, thou rumor are floating of a new version coming out but who knows when. the current version is already damn solid for DX user

Think its time to drop Nikon an email for some explanation.....

Yes, it does. But a possible (and likely) explanation is that they're 'playing safe'

Having 70-200 f/2.8 VR, you are already holding one the best trinity lens in Nikon series, adding a TC 1.4, gives you up to 280mm which is pretty near 300mm or if you want, go get a TC 1.7 which gives you 340mm. Using teleconverters gives you slower effective lens, basically is "multiplier * original aperture f/stop" For TC 1.4, your f/2.8 lens becomes f(2.8 * 1.4), For TC 1.7: f(2.8 * 1.7) and TC 2 f(5.6). Forget the 70-300mm, you are wasting money because your are repeating your focal length for 70-200mm range. Since you already own a 70-200mm, means weight is not an issue for you right from the beginning, if you feel it is any issue, then sell it away and gt the 70-300, but there you go, you wasted $ and also you get a much slower lens from 4.5~5.6 which wonders why you got the 70-200 in the first place :)
Both TC 1.4 and TC 1.7 gives good enough sharpness when use with 70-200, only TC 2 will give you a less than impressive image quality. At TC 1.7, your lens is still faster than 70-300mm.

Thanks David for your advice. I will get the TC instead of the 70-300mm VR. But which 1 will be better as I have check the TC 1.4 & TC 1.7 are at the same rate $575 at Cathay Photo:think:. Thanks:thumbsup:

Thanks all you guy who have give me your advice you all are "GREAT" the spirit of Nikon User. Thanks alot guys. Still thinking ehich TC to get TC1.4 or TC 1.7:think::bsmilie:

Read from the replied post again...

"1.7" is calling for you.

lowest price is 520..... dun go to CP....

Yap you are rite. I went to check with OP at sim lim you told me they quote me the same as you told me $520 but Alan Photo with warrt at $530. 10buck diff with warrt:)

I suggest you "downgrade" to DX, if your shooting style is tele. You will reach 300mm, f2.8, high fps. :bsmilie:

Ya i was thinking the same thing. Why not get a second hand d80 body (around 700+-) And you got a wonderful back up body for your d700 + it has built in 1.5 times teleconverter (without the smaller aperture) though the iso performance would be different.

The 70-200mm F/2.8 effectively becomes a 105-300mm F/2.8 and the full frame 300mm F/2.8 VR is very heavy and cost around 7k+ new. Your call.

It comes with a price pal :) 2 issues with your recommendation though it's a feasible one that the TS must take note.

d80 IQ is not anywhere near what D700 can offer you, even with a TC 2.0 on the 70-200 lens. Your 1.5 crop factor is not giving u extra, just that it crops. and gives u a tighter framing. Then if you use a D300, you still get similar number of pixels because the pixel pitch is smaller now, meaning your noise gets much higher in this case between D300 sensor technology is not much advance than D700's. Worse you are suggesting D80, lower pixel count and less advance technology compared to D300.

Of course if you are covering an event, 2 bodies is a very good to have option.

Go for the TC1.7 since the price is similar. TC 1.4 gives u just that little edge over which I personally feel is not sufficient to justify for the price you are paying. Even if the quality of image is worse than TC1.4, I still would recommend go for 1.7 if not why you even bother a teleconverter. You are holding on to a zoom lens, not a prime lens, so flexibility is on your side to get the correct framing incase you find the longest end from TC 1.7 is too much.

I have not covered any golf game, so I ain't the right person to give recommendation on it :)
But I suspect if you are in a golf game and you are using full frame body, I don't think 200mm is tight enough to cover a full person ? I observe over television broadcast that observers are normally quite far away. But you definitely don't need a f/2.8 for golf game because it will be quite well lit. I would say TC2.0 giving you 140-400 at 1.5 f-stop lesser than 2.8 is good enough on a sunny day.
My 2 cents worth.

OK Thanks for your advice. I guess if I need a TC will get a TC1 .4 or TC 1.7 as what you say TC2.0 is not as good & I have read it somewhere to. Thanks
