Hi guys..

I am starting to get interested to learn videography. my current equipment is a canon 60D + 17-40L.
probably will add in a fast wide angle prime in the future.

TRIPOD

I am wondering if I need to just get a video head to pair with my manfrotto 190xprob or should I get a video tripod+head set.

if I can get a video head, what is your budget head recommendation? (mine using ballhead 496rc2 for stills.. so i may need a panning video head)

MOVING support

if let say im taking video while moving.. whats the current budget/best value support i can start with? i saw many people use st like glidecam/flycam, is that suitable for beginner?

and if possible ans my other Q - how u guys (who use DSLR) adjust focus ring while on moving support? or just half press shutter to get AF? or on small aperture all the time?

Thanks a lot!!

slim86>>> For your tripod and fluid head. I can recommend get that Weifeng 717 or Fancier 717 for your Manfrotto tripod OR you could fork out roughly about $200 for a Libec set up. At the end of the day, whatever rocks your boat and your pocket Bro. I use Weifeng 717 on a Sirui tripod. It works for me.

Moving Support - In my humble opinion, it is not about whether is it suitable for beginner. You need practise, practise, practise and explore all the variables you can with a glidecam or camera stabilizers. You can take a look at monopod or DSLR rig as another option. Depending on your preference.

Focus Ring Adjustment - I just use my fingers or a follow-focus system or if you can find a clothes peg or a jar opener that can grip your focus ring, it would be great. But I do use AF at times if I am not planning my shots. If I want to do a rack shot, I would not use AF.

Small Aperture - Depends on your preference Bro. What kind of image you want to potray with regards to DOF.

I am a newbie in videography. Just sharing my mistakes that I made.

hi daniyal,

thanks for the kind reply! i will do a search for the weifeng head u mentioned.

ya im pretty confused with so many video supports available in the market. do you have any source of info on different usage of these supports?
if i know how they function, i could choose one best suited me.

DOF.. u remind me.. that's a choice of own's perspective.. u r right..

Ive tried adjusting focus manually for recording.. its not easy for me yet... i guess i need more practice for that..

thanks anyway!

Bro, you could search them at YouTube. With regards to your preference and the videos you have watched, you will come to a conclusion. Check out CheesyCam website. They have tonnes of reviews. I have tried shooting with rig, tripod, monopod and motion pro stabilizer. Each has its own benefits. My ranking will be like this.
1. Tripod
2. Monopod
3. Glidecam - This depending if I want a flying effect throughout.
4. DSLR rig - I have used once and that's it.

- After couple more video shoots, you will get the hang of it.

Happy Video Shooting!!! ;)

Same, I also use jar opener for focus puller. But it'll be troublesome with a big lens, like 82mm. Keep getting loose..

I find lcd viewfinder is very helpful in focusing. Buy this!

I used glidecam once but to achieve the effect is so difficult. Even I set to balance it for 2hrs :-!
Now I only use monopod or tripod
