i know the 100mm is a prime lens, is the 50mm a prime lens too?

yes. Lens with fixed focal length are prime. Some prime lens are special like macro, fish eye, tilt and shift.

So maybe it ain't such a good idea to get two prime lens as my only two lens. Any good general purpose lens to add, hopefully, not too expensive as the 100mm one is quite expensive... or maybe I should leave out the 50mm altogether.... advice please...

Thanks.

i use the 24-105mm as my general lens, thou i am quite interested to get the 24-70mm. The first one has the range and IS. The second one has the f/2.8 making it fast and bright. Both lens produce good image quality.

A cheaper one Canon to consider is the 24-85mm. It can do portraits and general photo shoot.

Third party lens to consider would be the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8.

Well, what is your budget? If budget permits, I'd suggest getting a 3rd party 17-50 (~S$600) + the 100mm f/2.8.

50mm is a little long on a 1.6x crop for a walk around, but it's small, light and cheap.

I'd get the 50mm 2nd hand off BnS. It can be gotten for $90 to $110.

I changed from a 24-105L to a 24-70, no regrets. Don't miss the 35mm extra reach or the IS (though IS can be useful).

50mm on a cropped body makes a reasonable portrait lens.

actually 24-105mm @ 105mm f/4 gives gd bokeh for macro shots. I used that setting for flower shots. Would want to get 24-70 when i save up enough. =D

Hi guys,

Of course the lesser the better but I am looking at spending approx S$3k in total. Is that too much? Considering the lens combo I am looking at... I know the 100mm f/2.8 is expensive but that comes with such great reviews.... From what you guys have written, I might just leave out the 50mm lens or get it 2nd hand... now I need a non-prime lens and what you've suggested, the 17-50, well, that could work too...

Thank you for all your inputs....

$3k for your budget.. lets see:
40D - approx $1.8k

here are my suggestions what you can do with the remaining $1.2k
1. go all Tamron! 17-50 + 90mm f2.8 Macro (exceeds $1.2k slightly)
2. 100 Macro (+- $800?) + 2nd hand Canon 24-85 (+- $350) (within $1.2k) or Tamron 17-50 (exceeds $1.2k by a hundred or two)

I've just been recommended by a friend of mine to get the 400D since the 40D and the 400D does not come with Full Frame....

I think a saving of over $700...

I am lost....

Go to a camera shop and try out both. At the end of the day I am sure you do not choose a cam because it is FF or not right?! The last time I had to choose between 30D and 350D, the grip played another impt factor. 400D is too small for a guys hand IMO

I am in total agreement on this... I am one guy who is suffering now, as my shooting style is hand hold the cam all the way with the E1 hand grip...

It is aching my finger digits, and please consider this factor... or if you can wait, wait for 450D.. rumored to be out in January.... and is only 2 mths away......

with a 400D, i have 3 fingers on the grip only... too tiny for me..

u need XXD series and above SLR, bro.. 400D is a ladies cut camera. difficult to hold for man.

Hey guys,

Thank you for all your invaluable input. I have decided on a 40D and a Canon 17-55 f/2.8 lens. Was going for the 100mm one but I think that can wait for a while.

Will be getting the camera by this weekend.

Once again, thanks guys.

my personal is to get the 24-70mm instead. It is much faster and has better bokeh. I am intending to get that lens. Giving up my 24-105mm. 24-70mm is indeed the wedding photojournalist lens. =D

hahaha, i wish! but the lens it's like 2+k.. wayyyyyyyy out of my budget!

any other alternative? :dunno:

I know... painfully now... getting gaffer tape to try to resolve this issue....

Planning on going some Lens Raid.... and this body got to last me for another 1 years at least!!

well, if u get from Oracle, the price is 1.9k. If grey set would be 1.7k.

if still too ex, 24-105mm is just ok for wedding but not the best lens if u want to get better shots. =)
