Macro if want budget can get the Tamron 90 mm
EF 28-200, in my opinion, is no use on your 500D or 50D
17-55 is a good lens.

For dry cabinet, since u got 2 body, maybe need a bigger one, 50L should be fine. 36 could be a bit small.

Yah, if you don't need the xtra tele, go for Tamron. Can save some money. I am eyeing this too! :bsmilie:

Invest in a good tripod. Don't waste yr money on cheapos.
Decent cam bags for comfort and aesthetic reasons (not to mention waterproofing).

You could try Digicabi dry cabinets and get decent filters at least, like those from hoya, you could even gaffer tape your lens hoods if your particular about scratches on them

get these if you can afford:

EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS - wide-angle/standard zoom
EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS - telephoto
Sigma 30mm f/1.4 - fast prime for low light/indoors
EF 50mm f/1.4 - portraiture
EF 60mm f/2.8 - macro
EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS - for travelling

that should cover ALL your needs for a loooooooooong time. DON'T get 70-200 f/4 NON-IS, unless you are planning to bring tripod all the time.

If you are on a really tight budget (like me):
EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS - wide angle/standard zoom
EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS - telephoto
EF 35mm f/2 - fast prime for low light/indoors
EF 50mm f/1.8 - portraiture
Kenko extension tubes (attach to EF 50mm for macro photography)

For ultra-wideangle you can add Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 or Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5, but for me, I don't use ultra wide angle range all that much.

my wife and i are considering getting a 500D(my wife) and a 50D(me), just wondering should we just get the kit lenses and get a 2 more zoom lenses to share or should we be buying a better lens for each system? any recommendations is greatly appreciated, budget for the lenses are only up to 2K max for the additional zoom lenses ifwe get the kit lenses

i know you say you want 2 cameras.

but consider getting one camera and more/better lenses too with the $$ you save.
2 bodies, 2 chargers, 2 sets of batteries. and 2 types of memory cards. can you imagine how annoying it is esp when travelling? and how often will you use 2 cameras at same time?

alt - instead of 2nd dslr, how abt an olympus pen, etc?

thanks for the advice, the reason for the 2 body is actually because one if it is for my wife. so that is why some of the lenses has a overlap in range.

My girlfriend want special present for her 20th birthday, an A330 Sony camera. Ends up I only bought D10 for her who enjoys take picture in pool

I definite don't recommend the kit lenses. I started this hobby 2 months ago. I bought a 40D and 18-55 and 55-250 double kit lenses. I thought I would be just a casual shooter so these 2 lenses would be good enough for a long time if not forever.

After 1 month, I sold both of them and bought 17-55 f2.8 and 70-200 f4 L. I only regret that I did not get better lenses from the beginning. Remember always invest more on the lenses not the body.

If I were you I will down grade the bodies you are going to buy, maybe even go for the second hand ones. Save your $ for the better lenses. The difference is visible instantly.

a good photographer with a cam holding 1/2.33" 2MP sensor set at ISO1600 wont give good pic...

a good photographer with good cam and good lens with good pic (in his own view) = lousy pic if the audience is wrong...

if can and willing to pay upfront, why get something else which need to be upgraded later... i dnt see a point...

IMO, you are true to certain extend.
Everyone is different, there could be possibility anybody who get the kit lens and camera found that they don't like photography (with DSLR). end up put a side or just sold off.

So, when a person is unsure, kit lens is good to start. But when he is very sure, he can probably spend a bit more.

Use the money to get a 5Dmkii or 7D for urself and buy a $50 film slr for your wife. Tell her 'filum' is the new digital

I understand that, but why is there a need to have two bodies? Will you both be shooting at the same time, all the time?
