Need help in Zoom lens for my D90

if you're shooting f1, you definitely need a f2.8 especially for night race..... other brands to look for maybe tamron or sigma.... also for f1 @ night, you may want to get the lens with VR (or similar) + a monopod......

My interests is to shoot sports (f1), animals (sg zoo). My budget is around 1000sgd.

the 70-300mm will give you better reach...

in good lighting both should be sufficient for fast moving subjects

if the light is not that good, you may still be able to manage with the 70-300 by raising your iso, but ideally you'd want lower iso for better image quality

and if the light is quite low, you won't be able to use it as the iso is at its limit. need a faster lens like a 2.8

also worth noting, if you'd like a more blurred background, a f2.8 will produce more than a f5.6, regardless of iso

I'm into sports photographying too, mayb we can meet up together for future sports event. Recently, I just shot lots of pics during the recently concluded Junior World Hockey 2009 @23June, help at SengKang West Stadium. I had my D90 + my 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR. Almost all the night shot time I put to max 105mm sitting at 4th row from the front hockey pit stand with ISO range between 800 - 1600 and speed between 1/800 - 1/1500. All turns out good pictures. The field was lit brightly with the same intensity exposure as that of F1 track light (I was there at last year SG GP working temp as an information staff at the Pit Grandstand counter). Hence, my testing of f5.6 on the Hockey field with roughly the same intense exposure should yield similar good result on a 70-300mm VR f/4.5-5.6.
Just got mine 70-300mm VR last Thurs.

Would love to join u and learn from each other. I already booked my ticket this F1. I watched F1 last year and was short changed of my photos because of my old semi-dslr camera. Now with my new d90, I want to go back and make the most out of the d90 capabilities.

So with my budget. I think the 70-300 fits my requirement. May need to play around the ISO to compensate with the aperture size. I'm also thinking on getting the 80-200 f/2.8 ED non VR but i'm not sure yet if it's worth it.

18-200 would help u to cover the necessary range in case u need to zoom in fast and changin len is not an option...

i prefer the 70-300 then the 80-200 or the 70-200 for the reach

but secondly because i don't shoot events, and i am an outdoor street guy so i don't need that fast a lens (70-200/80-200 is a f/2.8 constant)

so the 70-300 fits my price range, and is lighter and more compact

my fave telephoto lens!

Sigh! I couldn't get mine this year - the Marina Bay Grandstand all sold out. Now hunting around see who could not attend & wish to sell it off. With your D90 u can up your ISO 800-1600 and still get good pics with strong Dynamic Range Image Quality.

If budget is not your concern...AND if you use it on a strong Monopod or Tripod while shooting all the time.

i don't use tripod all the time....

sometimes still can handhold.

when shooting F1 , honestly

the ideal lens is a 200mm f/2 coupled with a full frame body for high ISO

Try sigma 100-300 f4 or alternatively get a 1.4TC for the 70-200 2.8.

18-200 is like quantity.you get alot of zoom and the most critical range
option b you go for quality.18-105 is great 70-300 is better and at 70-200 range,it sure beats the 18-200 in quality

i rented a nikkor 70-300mm 4-5.6G lens for use at the NDP NE 3 as i'm looking to buy one of this zoom range...
without the VR its pretty difficult to shoot under those lighting...
but i pumped the ISO to 2500 the shots are still pretty decent on my D90...
but i think a 3rd party 70-300 f2.8 should do fine for me..

Interesting topic... I too am looking for a telephoto lens and the Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG MACRO is the cheapest that I know of. Is it any good? From what I read so far, this is a slow lens and not good for night shots.. but all the same, please divulge some enlightment on it...
