Need advise? Buying 60D or 7D

I have a 7D. I agree in that if you don't plan to make full use of the AF system in the 7D, something which does include learning the purpose of all the settings associated with the AF system (which is as complex as the one in the 1D Mark IV), then there's not much you gain over the 60D. The other things are pretty marginal. Higher continuous drive speed, better viewfinder and better ergonomics. But if you aren't going to stress your camera, and yourself, to catch quick action/sports, you'll probably not need it.

For landscape, the output is so close to identical that you'll never notice any difference.

Actually, if die die must upgrade body (i.e not lens), he should get 7D straight away.
Resale value is higher.

Don't forget 60D uses SDHC while 7D uses CF.
One use diesel, another use petrol ;p

60D will becomes 600D very soon ...
7D will remain in 7D for a long time. Maybe 7D MK2.

Hi all,

I just sold my Nikon D700 system (Body with grip, 4 lenses & 2 flashes) to look for a video capable DSLR. Since Canon has more experience in producing DSLR that shoots video, I am considering to buy either a Canon 7D, 60D or 550D.

Canon 7D has the best features of all, and a price to match. At 820g, it isn't light. Having owned Nikon D700 that weighs 995g made me realise the importance of travelling light. Nikon D700 with a 24-70mm lens can weigh over 1.9kg. That doesn't include battery grip, flash and tripod. Unless I need a particular feature in 7D (like its 8fps shooting speed), its not my preferred choice. Especially with the thought of paying a premium and still get the same photo and video quality as 550D (no offence to all 7D owners out there).

Canon 60D is the 'in between' in term of size, features and price. One of its unique features attracted me most - its screen. None of Canon DSLR has it ..yet. An articulating screen is very important when shooting video. Its useful for taking pictures too, like shooting over-the-head subject in crowded places. Thats the main reason why I sold my Nikon D700, it can't shoot video.

I like Canon 550D for its size and its price. I can buy a better lens from the money saved. Best part of this camera is that it produces the same picture and video quality as 60D and 7D. If articulating screen isn't my primary consideration, it would be my choice camera.

Just my humble opinion.

I'm 7D user ...

IMHO Going from a D700 to 7D is a "downgrade" in a number of areas from a still photography perspective. The D700 has better AF system, high ISO performance and a full frame sensor. On the other hand, 7D has better frame rate and video and is quite a bit lighter than the D700.

If you really like the features on the 550D but want the articulating screen then perhaps you should wait for the 600D which is rumoured to have an articulating screen.

7D's 19 AF points are a delight to use!

Hi Lim Leong,

Yes. D700 is a good camera. I love its high ISO performance and 51 autofocus points most. I can take very low light pictures without flash and not having to worry about noise. Its autofocus is superb too.

The problem I have is its too heavy for me to bring it with my videocam (my professional videocam weighs 2.2kg). I have to carry 2 seperate bags, 2 tripods, lenses and accessories too. It weighs at least 10kg. Now imagine climbing the Great Wall of China with that weight. I did it. I felt like a slave.

So I decided to sell off everything a buy a DSLR that can shoot video to keep things simple. The Canon 60D may not produce the same picture and video quality of my D700 and Sony NX5P, it definitely worth the effort. Literally.

You're forgetting that:
1) 7D will also have higher depreciation
2) 60D was launched after the 7D and therefore will likely be replaced later

Diesel and petrol? What sort of analogy is that? :dunno:

I was the same, I waited years for something that can do both photos and videos well. Sanyo and Hitachi were one of the first to try this with a 1080p HDD video camera, but are nothing compared to these new generation DSLRs now.

You should really get the 5D if you're coming from the D700. The 7D is a good compromise for those on a budget. It is the best crop sensored video DSLR you can get, the 60D and 550D are lower models and while you can shoot certains scenes the same the 7D does much better in lower light. I also find the handling and buttons better on the 7D than the 60D, just faster to do things.

Call me crazy....i switched from 7D to 60D due to the LCD & the bit of weight difference .

Every bit of grams count when your backpacking . And it's damn hard to look at the LCD when you are doing some shots from knee cap level shooting upwards.

Hmm..interesting..im contemplating either also..but im looking for a lightly used 7D or a new 60D..will keep a look at this thread, though im incline towards 7D:think:

Think both 60D and 7D has it own pros n cons, it hard to compare which is better as different people have different needs and both camera have it own special features and functions.
When doing research on both camera, I was thinking of getting 60D instead so as to save few hundreds. Then I was sitting in the shop for quite long time with the 2 camera in front of me. Think in the end it the grip and feel that make me decided the 7D, also thinking that since want to upgrade, might as well go all way to 7D for long run.
450D is a gd entry camera, but feel it (the grip) bit too small for me. And with heavy lens attached to it, the weight seem bit unbalance.

Agreed. Every gram counts when you are doing some serious tramping. My 7D has done some serious tramping but without the tripod ! In hindsight, I probably should have carried the tripod along ...

Hi all, i was thinking to upgrade my camera (450D) to either 60D or 7D. After some survey the only disadvantage from 60D is that its having a plastic body and only 9AF points. As for the noise control and colour taken at hi ISO, its not much of a difference? Need advise wether is it worth it to pay another $1K to get the 7D instead of the 60D. Anyone out there considering of buy either one of this camera?

I had all three cameras at one point: 450D, 60D and 7D. I sold my 7D after using the 60D for a while.

Image quality is the same between 60D and 7D.

QC is much better for 60D, at least it has much fewer reports of bad AF than 7D. 7D AF is not very reliable in low light although it excels in good light AF tracking. Contrast based live view focusing is much better on 7D.

7D has excellent handling, but it's also heavier.
